County giving license forgiveness for child support payers

ELYRIA — If your driver’s license has been suspended because you haven’t been paying child support, August is the month you should make good on that debt

The county Child Support Enforcement Agency is one of 20 counties throughout the state participating in a forgiveness program that allows reinstatement of driver’s licenses for those who have had those licenses suspended for failing to pay child support.

Participants can get their license back if they pay one full month of their child support obligation and an additional amount toward back support they owe.

The forgiveness program will last throughout August, which has been designated Child Support Awareness Month in the county.

More than 6,000 parents in the county have had their driver’s licenses suspended for failing to pay court-ordered child support, according to a CSEA news release.

Last year, 302 parents who owed back child support came forward to participate in the program, allowing the agency to collect $114,653 for 435 children in the county.

As an added incentive to get parents to pay their child support, the agency will be raffling off backpacks full of school supplies and food baskets donated by the agency’s workers.

To take advantage of the amnesty period, stop by the agency or mail a check to 42485 North Ridge Road, Elyria, OH 44035.
