Coroner to rule on 2-year-old's death

Lorain County sheriff’s deputies say they’re waiting on a ruling from the Cuyahoga County coroner to decide whether to pursue criminal charges in connection with the April 1 death of a 2-year-old.

Zyairre DaShaun Pasenow, 23 months old, died Aug. 1 at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, where he’d been staying for the past month after being taken by ambulance from his family’s Sheffield Township home, Lorain County sheriff’s Capt. Rich Resendez said.

Cuyahoga County Coroner Elizabeth Balraj’s office has not ruled on Zyairre’s official cause of death other than saying Tuesday that the boy’s death stemmed from an “unnatural cause.”

Resendez said deputies will wait for an official report from the coroner before continuing their investigation.

“There’s a possibility that something criminal did occur,” Resendez said.

Abuse specialists and doctors at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital contacted sheriff’s deputies after determining — while Zyairre was still alive — that the child’s medical problems may have been caused by unnatural means, Resendez said.

“The baby was healthy prior to going to the hospital,” Resendez said, adding that the child showed no long-term signs of abuse and his injuries were possibly caused by a sudden incident.

“We don’t know what the baby died of yet,” Resendez said. “We’re looking into the cause of death; based on the results of the investigation, criminal charges could follow."
