'I hope you burn' - Family members express anger

ELYRIA — The devil is Lee Vert Brown, said the family of Brown’s wife, whom he ran off the road, pulled from her car and stabbed to death last June.
Brown was sentenced to
20 years to life in prison by county Common Pleas Judge James Burge on Thursday, but it wasn’t nearly enough for the family of his victim, 44-year-old Metra Milton.
“He needs to be killed just like my mom was,” Milton’s daughter, Stephany Milton, told Burge, offering to kill him herself.
She said Brown — who struck a plea bargain with prosecutors in May and pleaded guilty to aggravated murder and other charges — had hunted her mother down and sliced her up like an animal. Brown had no reason to kill her mother, Stephany Milton said, except that he was a crack addict and a drunk.
“He took (her life) for the most selfish reason,” she shouted. “He’s the devil.”
Angela Milton, Metra Milton’s niece, calmly told Brown that she hoped he would be sliced from bottom to top in a brutal fashion while in prison.
“I hope you burn for all eternity,” she said.
Brown, 58, apologized to the family before Burge handed down the sentence, and he said he hopes to work with younger men in prison so they don’t make the same mistakes he did.
“I just want to let the Milton family know about how sorry I am about all the pain,” he said.
After the hearing, Angela Milton said she didn’t believe a word of it. Brown, she said, was sorry he got caught, not for the killing.
“That apology wasn’t sincere,” she said.
But Brown’s attorney, Doug Merrill, said his client never denied killing Metra Milton to him and seemed very remorseful for his actions. The statements of his wife’s family didn’t surprise his client, Merrill said.
“He never had any illusions of them coming in and forgiving him,” Merrill said.
Brown rammed his car into a car driven by Metra Milton and carrying two of her family members as they were heading to the Elyria police station after he confronted her at a friend’s home. The car crashed near Gateway Boulevard and West River Road and Brown ran to the car and stabbed Metra Milton in the left arm and heart with an 8-inch long kitchen knife, then fled the area. He was arrested later that night in Lorain.
Brown also had attacked Metra Milton with a box cutter and baseball bat about a month before he killed her, according to police.
