Suspect indicted in baby's death

Kevin Kimbrough could face the death penalty

ELYRIA — A Lorain man could face the death penalty if he’s convicted of charges filed against him Thursday in connection with the June 26 death of an 8-month-old boy in his care, county prosecutors said.
Kevin Kimbrough, 24, is being held on a $1 million bond in Lorain County Jail after a county grand jury indicted him on charges of murder, aggravated murder, felonious assault and four counts of child endangering.
Police said last month that Kimbrough was suspected in the death of Jayden Davidson, a baby who died of severe head and brain injuries that police suspect occurred while Kimbrough was babysitting him on the morning of June 26. The boy’s brother, 2 — also in Kimbrough’s care that day — suffered injuries police said indicated a long-term pattern of child abuse.
County Coroner Paul Matus said last month that he found evidence during the autopsy that Jayden had both new and old injuries.
Since June 27, Kimbrough has been in the county jail — held on an unrelated theft charge.
County Prosecutor Dennis Will said prosecutors sought the death penalty because the evidence pointed to Kimbrough deliberately killing the baby. And, because the child was younger than 13, the incident qualified under Ohio law for the possibility of the death penalty as punishment.
Will wouldn’t specify evidence that police and prosecutors assembled, but said Jayden’s was a horrible death.
“Clearly we have an 8-month-old that suffered a traumatic death, and that’s a serious matter,” Will said.
The child’s mother, Julie St. Clair, 20, of Lorain, declined to comment on the case Thursday other than to say she wasn’t surprised by the charges. Her older son, who was hospitalized after his brother’s death for his own injuries, is not in her care, a family member said.
