ELYRIA — A Lorain man was stabbed in the back with a kitchen knife following an argument over a woman, police said.
Cleveland Merritt was treated at EMH Regional Medical Center following the stabbing. He was later flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. He was listed in fair condition Thursday, said a hospital spokeswoman.
Merritt, 33, told police he went to a home on Jefferson Street to speak with a man living there about a female when the suspect became enraged. Merritt told police he did not go inside the home and instead turned to leave. The suspect grabbed a pair of scissors and threatened Merritt, a police report said.
Merritt said he was walking away when he suddenly felt something sharp pierce his back. He ran from the home and called his aunt to say he was hurt and needed to go to the hospital.
Nancy Merritt said she rushed her nephew to the hospital after receiving the call. She said the suspect is a friend of her nephew and he attacked without provocation.
“I’m just shocked something like this could happen,” she said. “Luckily, he wasn’t hurt that bad and should come home from the hospital soon.”
Nancy Merritt does not know the woman the two men were arguing over.
Merritt received a stab wound to the middle left side of his back with what police believe was a 6-inch kitchen knife.
Elyria police Lt. Andy Eichenlaub said an Elyria hospital staff member first notified the department around 10 p.m. that they were treating a stabbing victim.
This came after an officer was sent to the area of Foster Avenue and Adams Street in search of a black man who was in the area and was bleeding badly. The officer didn’t find anyone and instead headed to the hospital, Eichenlaub said.
No one has been arrested in connection with the assault, but detectives are talking to the Jefferson Street resident to determine his side of the story, Eichenlaub said. Police are not identifying him because he has not been charged.
“It’s under investigation at this point, and we are in contact with the suspect,” he said.
