LORAIN — Twenty princesses from Lorain County will grace the stage of the Lorain Palace Theatre tonight, but only one will walk away as the winner.
Candidates representing 12 nationalities and ethnicities will participate in the Parade of Princesses. The winner will represent her community, national identity and diversity during one of the landmark events of the Lorain International Festival.
Contestants are judged by an independent panel from outside the area. Four girls are chosen as queens of the court, and of the four, one will be named queen.
“They know the ethnic dress, history and family stories of where they’re from,” said Carol Bruening, co-chairwoman of the festival. “They teach the younger generation about diversity and what it is all about.”
All four members of the queens court are expected to attend community festivals and gatherings throughout the year.
The Lorain International Festival is celebrating its 40th year of showcasing the diversity of the area. Festivities will continue throughout the week with the three-day International Festival and Bazaar beginning 5 p.m. Friday at the Black River Landing. The Festival and Bazaar will continue through Sunday.
The Princess Pageant, which is co-sponsored by First Federal Savings of Lorain, begins at 7 p.m.
