LORAIN — Lorain teachers who didn’t lose their jobs last week won’t get a pay raise this year, but they’ll get three pay increases over the following two years.
The raises are included in the Lorain Education Association’s new contract that was approved by the union’s membership last week and by the Lorain school board at its meeting Monday.
The teachers will get a 3 percent raise for the 2008-09 school year, 3 percent for the 2009-10 year and an additional 3 percent increase effective Jan. 1, 2010.
The five-hour board meeting Monday was consumed by parents, teachers and students expressing their anger at the board for cutting 246 of the district’s 714 teachers. The move was made to save $12.5 million from the district’s $91 million budget because of a $4.75 million shortfall expected by June 30.
The teacher cuts, however, were just the first round of cuts to bring the district’s staffing in line with a dwindling enrollment and avert placing the district in jeopardy of being taken over by the state.
Administrative positions totaling $1 million likely will be cut this week, along with $2.2 million in noncertified positions and $250,000 in non-athletic supplemental personnel.
The cuts probably will be announced by the end of the week, said Dean Schnurr, spokesman for the district.
“They’ll have to be off by July 1,” Schnurr said.
During Monday’s meeting, board member Keith Lilly told Superintendent Dee Morgan that if further cuts are necessary, she should look at administrative staffing.
