Clearview seniors keep stiff upper lip

SHEFFIELD TWP. — The 120 Clearview High School grads are as hardboiled as they come, with a school motto that reads: “Life’s tough, get a helmet.” The class song is “Good Riddance” by Green Day.

Despite how tough life may have been during the seniors’ four-year high school tenure, they were all smiles taking the long, slow walk to the stage of the Palace Theatre in Lorain. It was a regal affair inside the walls of the renovated theater as the processional boomed through the house speakers in surround sound.

“You are free to enjoy your last high school summer,” said Steve Lindsey, class speaker. “Now the day has finally come, and we’re here in our blue and white ponchos ... um ... I mean gowns.”

Mike Tomusko was Clearview’s valedictorian and Jenny Ryan was salutatorian for the class of 2007. Many of the graduates received scholarships, some upward of $200,000, to attend some of Ohio’s finest colleges.

“It feels great to be here,” graduate Joseph Hall said. “I’m going to miss all my friends and teachers.” Perhaps the $6,000 scholarship he received from Lorain County Community College to study computer operations will make the severance a little easier for Hall.

Of course, not all graduates know exactly what they want to study or where to go. Kyle Webber said he plans to attend LCCC, but what he will study and where he will go from there is something he wants to figure out along the way.

After the school band played and the choir belted out its cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time,” Principal Daniel Parent had a few words to leave students with.

“I have watched you grow since your freshman year, and I am proud,” Parent said. “You have accomplished more than the acquisition of knowledge — you have earned your place on this stage.”
