AVON LAKE — Area police are investigating the theft of an Elyria police lieutenant’s unmarked police cruiser stolen from his Avon Lake home late last week, Elyria and Avon Lake police said.
The 2006 Chevy Impala was parked in the driveway of the lieutenant’s Wolford Court home Thursday, and was stolen sometime that night or early Friday, Avon Lake police Lt. Duane Streator said.
There were no weapons inside the vehicle, though there was a bulletproof vest and portable police radio, said Elyria police Lt. Andy Eichenlaub.
Eichenlaub asked that the Elyria lieutenant not be identified because it would reveal his home address. The Chevy Impala was unmarked — there were no police decals — but it is owned by the city of Elyria, Eichenlaub said.
There were no keys left in the car overnight, so Eichenlaub said it would be pure speculation as to how the thief made off with the vehicle.
On Saturday, Avon Lake police issued a bulletin to area law enforcement officials to be on the lookout for the stolen vehicle. As of Monday, police were still trying to locate the car.
