Westlake selects new school superintendent

WESTLAKE — Daniel J. Keenan Jr., of Chagrin Falls, was selected to be the new Westlake school district’s superintendent from a pool of 46 applicants.
In addition to serving the Kenston Local Schools as assistant superintendent for the past five years, Keenan also was a high school administrator and director of personnel for the Maple Heights school district.
He also has worked as a teacher and guidance director for Steubenville schools and as a junior high and elementary teacher in Indiana.
“The board believes that his various experiences within the K-12 continuum will serve the district well in its vision to improve student achievement at all levels,” said board president Renee D’Ettorre Wargo. “Based on everything we have learned, Dr. Keenan is an outstanding educator with a vision for the future and an uncompromising goal to help move our district to an even higher level.”
Keenan said Westlake’s commitment to excellence, responsible financial stewardship and an established continuous improvement plan attracted him. “I’m committed to continuing what I think are excellent practices, including utilizing resources wisely to maximize student achievement,” he said.
“I know there’s a tradition of excellence established and know there’s still quite a bit of potential to grow,” Keenan said. “I’m committed to my role in being a part of seeing that happen.”
Keenan earned his Ph.D. in education administration from Cleveland State University and completed graduate work for principal and assistant superintendent certification at Franciscan University of Steubenville.
He comes from a family of educators. Keenan’s father was a superintendent, his brother is superintendent in Maple Heights, his mother was a university department head and his wife is the gifted-education coordinator for Aurora schools.
In other school news, board of education member David Beal intends to resign effective June 13.
He accepted a new job out of the area.
The board is accepting applications for this position until June 11.
