Conquer your obstacles - Brookside Graduation

ELYRIA — Family and friends cheered as the 149 Brookside High School graduating seniors took their seats on the Lorain Palace Theatre stage Saturday.
The day for the students and their families was filled with memories and advice from fellow classmates and administrators. Never sweat the small things in life, Board of Education President William Emery advised.
“I hope that your life will be like a jar of mayonnaise and a cup of coffee,” Emery said.
Emery told of a professor who took an empty mayonnaise jar and filled it with golf balls. He asked if the jar was full, and the class replied that it was. But there was room for pebbles, sand and even a cup of coffee to fill the remaining space.
The golf balls represented the most important people in life, including family and friends. The pebbles symbolized less important material items, such as a car or house, while the sand represented the little things, Emery said.
“As you leave here today, I hope you always take care of the golf balls,” he said.
More than 50 students were recognized for their scholarship awards, and 29 seniors received an honors diploma.
Superintendent Will Folger was full of advice.
“Learn for life,” he said. “Everyone you meet is a teacher, and everything you do is a lesson.”
Senior class President Nicole Gregg thanked parents and family for their support.
“Thank you for being so understanding and patient,” she said. “Now it’s time to flip the page to the next chapter of our lives, and we won’t want to do it without you.”
Leanne Hysell, senior class secretary, encouraged classmates to continue to conquer obstacles.
“We will have many obstacles in our lives, but how we overcome the obstacles is what matters,” she said. “Throughout the years, your exterior may change, but your interior will not. I wish you success in whatever ignites your heart.”
