Local DVD project serves as memorial to church's fallen

LORAIN — As Lorain County prepares to recognize its 98 residents who were killed in the Vietnam War, the youth director at a South Lorain church is preparing to recognize its seven parishioners who were killed.
Nelson Ramirez is creating a video documentary in which he interviews the families of the seven members of Sacred Heart Chapel who sacrificed their lives for their country in Vietnam. The video will be presented June 21, during a dinner at DeLuca’s Place in the Park in Lorain, two days before the county unveils its own memorial to the fallen.
“This is such an honor for these people who paid such a steep price,” Ramirez said.
Tickets for the Lorain County Vietnam War Fallen Heroes Recognition Dinner are $25 per person, with the proceeds going to the youth ministry program at the church.
Ramirez said he began the project last year when he learned about the startling number of parishioners who lost their lives in Vietnam. As he started to hear stories from their surviving family members, he knew their voices had to be documented.
“I’m so happy I was able to do this,” he said. “I think the families will enjoy it.”
The video contains music and interviews conducted by Ramirez. It was taped and produced by Joseph Carrion of Lorain, who has spent more than 100 hours on the project.
“At first I was just going to do this really quickly, but then I started to listen to their stories and tears started coming down my eyes,” Carrion said. “When I started listening to that, I wanted to put more time into it.”
Carrion said he’ll be selling the DVDs of the videos.
