Princess profiles: Meet Slovak princess Emily Sas

Name: Emily Sas

Age: 17

Nationality: Slovak

Sponsor: St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish

Parents: Robert and Michele Sas Jr.

High school: Lorain Southview High School/Lorain High School class of 2011

Costume: "My costume is a Kroj, a traditional Slovak folk costume. Slovak women typically wear brightly colored Kroj. Embroidered flowers can be found on the skirt, vest and tails of the costume. The flower headpiece with flowing ribbons represents the fact that I am an unmarried woman. I selected the bright red color for my skirt to represent the flag of Slovakia. I also intertwined the other two colors of the flag, blue and white, into the embroidered flowers of the costume."

Ethnic roots: "My maternal great-great grandmother was born in 1877 in the village of Nižný Tvarožec. She and her husband moved to Pennsylvania in 1900 to work in the coal mines. In 1906, she returned to Slovakia with her two children because she missed her homeland. She never returned to America; however, her daughter returned to the United States in 1925 at the age of 20. My paternal great-grandfather, George Sas, came to Lorain in 1922 from the village of Čekovce. He worked at National Tube to save up money to bring over his wife and three daughters from Slovakia. They had seven more children, one of whom was my grandfather, Robert Sas Sr."

Favorite musical group: No Doubt

Favorite book: Twilight series

Favorite movie: "Pirates of the Caribbean"

Princess comments: "I am very honored to be the third generation from my family to represent our Slovak heritage at the Lorain International pageant. My great aunt and cousin were both Slovak princesses, and I am very proud to carry on the tradition of representing our nationality. I hope to carry on my family’s ethnic traditions for future generations of our family!"
