High school wrestling: Firelands' Payton Burgdorf rises to challenge against tougher competition, wins Medina Invitational Tournament

MEDINA — Payton Burgdorf’s rise to the top this season has been one of grit and determination.

A fourth-place finisher at state last season in Division II, the Firelands sophomore knew the competition would come hot and heavy.

So far, so good.

Thursday the 106-pounder ended the 43rd annual Medina Invitational Tournament with a title to join teammates Sean Lipscomb (third, 285) and Connor Eckman (eight, 113) on the podium.

Burgdorf defeated two-time junior high state placer Garett Lautzenheiser of Louisville 9-4 for the title.

“He has taken his wrestling to another level because of it,” Firelands coach Josh Walbom said. “He knows it’s gametime every time we step in the gym from here on out. He knows there’s elite competition everywhere.

“He reminds me a little bit of Jeff Jaggers (a two-time national champion) from Ohio State. The guy would just step up when the NCAA Tournament came on. He’s a gamer. Payton is exactly the same way.”

At 22-0 following the MIT, Burgdorf’s season has been more a tour of excellence than anything else. When Firelands decided to drop the Tri-State Border Wars in favor of the MIT, he knew the competition would be tough, but he embraced it.

“Last year, we didn’t have as much good competition,” he said. “We went to Perrysburg and had a couple of good duals, but this year I feel like our new coach has really gotten us into elite tournaments. This type of tournament is going to help me when it comes to sectional, district and state.”

Burgdorf has taken his fourth-place finish in Columbus and used it as a driving force to get better as he looks to climb higher on the podium.

“I love having the fact people want to gun for me,” he said. “It means I have something to prove. I can’t go out there and lose a match because it’s going to be a big deal. Everyone is gunning for me instead of me gunning for everyone else.”

That attitude has certainly paid dividends as Walbom has taken his star pupil under his wing and seen what he hopes will one day be a state champion.

“It’s his desire to be on top,” Walbom said. “He doesn’t settle. Last year, he was happy to be a state placer, a state qualifier and all that, but it’s a new challenge this year. Yeah, we got on the podium, but now, it’s, ‘Can we get on the top?’ It’s almost a positive that he ended that way. It’s almost like he came back with an attitude to get to the next level.”

Lorain’s Shawn Petty Jr. (7th, 160) rounded out the list of Lorain County competitors who placed at the MIT.
