AVON LAKE — The weather was far from ideal for the 22nd Avon Lake Invitational, but Lorain County athletes handled the tumultuous conditions Saturday and turned in some quality performances.

The host Shoremen were best in the area with 64 points and a fourth-place finish out of 15 teams. Strongsville ran away with the boys title with 119 points, followed by Wadsworth (93.5) and Rocky River (68.5).

Danny Lambert and Jacob Nasr were among the catalysts for the Avon Lake boys. Lambert was second in the 100 (11.73) and 200 (23.29), and Nasr was second in the 1,600 (4:39.13).

“Obviously I wanted to win but I didn’t really have it,” Lambert said of the 200. “I might have been feeling just a little tired. I didn’t have a super racing day. I’ve been injured the past few weeks. I have a right hip flexor problem. I was feeling decent until it got colder.”

Nasr appeared pleased with his effort in the 1,600.

“I had a pretty good group of guys going,” Nasr said of drafting. “It helped to get some good wind breaks, especially in the 100-meter homestretch. It was very important to find a guy and stay behind him and to race with him.”

Nasr’s main challenger from behind was Avon sophomore Jett Wieber, who ended up third in 4:42.78.

The Avon Lake boys also got key contributions from junior Owen Barnhorst in the pole vault (12-0) and Justin Wirtz in the shot put (46-5.5). Both placed second.

“We were a little short-handed today,” coach Rob Rocco said. “We’re very pleased with everything.”

The weather pattern threw two big punches.

A heavy rainstorm dropped in on the area between 10:45 and 11 a.m., just as the field was wrapping up morning prelims and just prior to a 30-minute break for lunch. The second haymaker came around 2 p.m. when a cold front dropped temperatures from the mid-50s to 39 degrees within about 15 minutes. The shift came for the last four events of the day, the 800, 200, 3,200 and 4x400.

Avon Lake was the top county finisher on the girls side, placing seventh of 15. Avon was 11th.

Senior Amber Achladis was a mainstay for the Shoregals. She was second in the 100 hurdles (17.06) and 300 hurdles (50.01) and as a member of the 4x400 relay along with Erica Wetzler, Tayleigh Price and Emma Knick (4:13.29).

“It definitely was a little windy today, but everyone was going through the same conditions,” Achladis said. “The homestretch was definitely the hardest (with the headwind). I feel like we have an advantage because we get to practice in it every day. My times weren’t the greatest today, especially in the 300 hurdles. I’m really trying to focus on the 100 hurdles because that’s the weaker of my two hurdle races.”

An all-district, all-county and All-Southwestern Conference center-forward, Achladis will sign a letter of intent in mid-April with St. Bonaventure to play soccer.

The Avon Lake girls also received a second from sophomore Brooke Lumpkin in shot put (37-9.25).

Avon sophomore Molly Radcliffe, a 2018 Division I state qualifier in shot put, had a much better day in discus (123-6). Radcliffe won discus by 17 feet but struggled in shot and came in third (36-5.5).

“It was a good season opener (for discus). I’m very happy with it,” she said. “Today was a personal best. I don’t know exactly why I threw well except that I came out and I was excited.”
