The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced today that this year’s state baseball tournament will be at Canal Park in Akron.
The finals have been held in Huntington Park in Columbus, the home of the Indians’ Triple-A affiliate, the Columbus Clippers, since that ballpark opened in 2009, but a scheduling conflict will move the tournament to the home of the Tribe’s Double-A affiliate, the Rubberducks.
“The Clippers and Huntington Park have been great hosts, but our baseball season is a week later now and it conflicts with the Clippers’ 2019 home schedule,” said Jerry Snodgrass, OHSAA Executive Director. “We looked at many sites, but for several reasons, including similar schedule conflicts at other locations, we believe that Canal Park is the best choice.”
No date is listed for the tournament on the OHSAA website, but the state tournament is typically held the weekend after regionals, which is May 30-31. The Clippers’ schedule shows them hosting the Norfolk Tides from June 6-9.
The OHSAA board of directors voted 8-0 to make the move. The board also unanimously approved the location for this year’s state football championships, at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, where they’ve been held since 2017.
