MASSILLON — One dream came true and one didn’t for the Avon Lake girls golf team Tuesday at the Division I district tournament at Legends of Massillon.
That’s because Paighton Masterson, the Shoregals’ top player and one of the top players in the area, is headed to state after tying for second with a 3-over 75.
That also tied her for first among individuals not on a state-qualifying team, earning her one of four state berths.
The day wasn’t as good for the Avon Lake team, which shot 347 to finish seventh and miss out on a trip to state by less than 10 strokes.
Liz Thieken shot 84, Emma Davies 85, Maggie Owens 98 and Marissa Hall 99 for the all-senior Shoregals.
It was a tough way to end the season, but Avon Lake coach Krystine Frisch was grateful for all the success the Shoregals had.
“I’m really proud of how the team handled themselves this season,” she said. “This was a record-breaking year for our team. We went 16-0, we three-peated the SWC (Southwestern Conference)… so we had a great year.
“We all hoped to get down to Columbus as a team, but sometimes that just doesn’t happen. This is a loaded district and there are some great scores out there.”
Madison Ardelean took medalist honors with a 74 while leading North Canton Hoover to third (338). Massillon Jackson won the team title with a 317, while GlenOak was second with 328 and Poland fourth with 340.
Masterson will be joined in Columbus by Wadsworth senior Cecilia Ho, who also shot 75, and Cloverleaf’s Averi Hanna and Hudson’s Jenn David, who both shot 76.
Locally, Amherst junior Rosalyn Friend shot a 100 (51-49) and failed to qualify for state.
Masterson fought through high winds, a wet course and freshly aerated greens to earn her first trip to state.
“I kind of just had to take it one hole at a time,” she said. “I was struggling with my putting, but hitting it well and getting it up and down.”
After reaching the green on the par-5 opening hole in two, Masterson three-putted for par. She picked things up from there, saving par on the fourth hole, despite putting her tee shot in the water. Then she birdied No. 8 and finished with a 37 on the East Course.
“I was kind of all over the place,” Masterson said. “I made par on the first hole and then parred and hit a great shot on the second hole and parred again, so I just had to play it by ear.”
Masterson carried the momentum from her birdie on No. 8 to the South Course, where she made back-to-back birdies on 12 and 13.
On the 468-yard, par-5 12th, she used a driver and a 5-hybrid to reach the green in two and two-putt for birdie. Masterson followed that with a chip-in birdie from the rough on the 139-yard, par-3 13th.
“Paighton was very focused,” Frisch said. “One of her goals was to make it down to states and I’m happy to say she achieved her goal. We’ve played some practice rounds here and she’s just been focused on this goal all year.”
