OBERLIN — Avon Lake junior Tyler Madden is used to the undulating, slick greens at private golf clubs. He used that experience to his advantage Monday at the Amherst Comet Invitational at Oberlin Golf Club.

Madden shot a 2-over-par 74 to claim medalist honors by a stroke over Bay’s Jack Nageotte.

Nageotte’s Rockets won the team title with a score of 327, eight strokes lower than Lutheran West’s 335. Vermilion, led by Reese Miller’s 77 and Mason Montgomery’s 79, was the top area school, shooting a 336 to tie Westlake for third in the 19-team field. North Ridgeville’s Alec Matej shot 79.

Madden, a member at Avon Oaks Country Club, said Oberlin Golf Club was a good fit for him.

“I hit the driver pretty straight and put myself into position to attack pins,” he said. “I kept it below the hole a lot because of these sloped greens. I love how this course is set up. It’s nice … it’s perfect. It really fits my game.”

Avon Lake coach Dan Wilson said Madden, who also won last week’s season-opening Elyria Catholic Invitational at Brentwood Golf Club, a public course, is comfortable on any track.

“He plays a lot of junior tournaments so he gets exposed to a lot of different kinds of greens,” Wilson said. “Everywhere you go the greens are different and it’s important to have that kind of experience.”

Wilson likes Madden’s mental toughness, as well.

“He’s a hard worker,” Wilson said. “He’s a member at Avon Oaks and he plays all summer there and works on his game. He’s got a great attitude. Nothing can shake him. Last year he had a triple (bogey) on his first hole, then was 1 over the rest of the round.

“That’s the kind of kid he is. He can shake off a bad hole and he has a great swing.”

Amherst coach Aaron Millet thinks it’s important for area high school golfers to experience playing at a private course like Oberlin Golf Club.

“Just to get on at a facility like this is neat for the kids,” Millet said. “It’s hard and something different than they’re used to … the greens are tough and have some good slope to them. Exposing the kids to something like this helps them as they go through the year because they’re going to play harder courses as they go along.

“We go to Sawmill Creek, we play at Columbia Hills, when you get to sectionals you’re going to play at Sweetbriar and at Pine Hills. You need to play at courses like this if you want to go through.”

He also said he’s grateful to the members at Oberlin for hosting the event.

“This is one of the better courses around here, for sure,” Millet said. “These people pay so much money to belong here and they let us come out here. We try to do our best to take care of the course as much as they take care of us.

“The members here are great people. Some of them actually come out, you’ll see them driving around, watching. That’s kind of cool. We appreciate them letting us come out here.

“They keep this course immaculate and it’s a lot of fun and it’s easy to walk. This is an old-school golf course and I think the kids really appreciate coming out here.”
