District hockey: Midview scores goals in bunches, bashes Normandy in opener; Olmsted Falls slips past Parma

BROOKLYN — After a tough first period, Midview scored three goals in 40 seconds in the second period Monday on the way to a 9-1 win over Normandy in the opening round of the district tournament at the Brooklyn Recreation Center.

The Middies (12-14) will face West Shore Conference foe Lakewood on Wednesday at 8 p.m.

Olmsted Falls also opened tourney play with a win, downing Parma 4-2. The Bulldogs will have their hands full Thursday when they face fourth-seeded Rocky River, a Final Four team from a year ago, at 5:30 p.m.

Jacob Lyons put Midview ahead in the first period, scoring at 1:11, but it wasn’t until the three-goal barrage midway through the second period that the Middies could relax.

The three goals not only came in a 40-second span, two of them were power-play goals that took all of 19 seconds.

Lyons netted his second score just 15 seconds after a Normandy interference call, Kyle Kudela followed just 10 seconds later on a feed from Lyons, and Tommy Coon scored just four seconds after a head-contact penalty for a 4-0 lead with 5:23 to go in the second period.

“The team that gets that first goal isusually the team that wins,” said Lyons, who has 22 goals on the year. “These guys needed that lift after the rough season that we’ve had this year.”

After 20 shots on goal in the second period, the Middies kept up the pressure in the third with an 18-4 advantage.

Five of the shots found the back of the net. Jacob Scheetz helped the cause with three assists and a goal as the Middies sent the game to a running clock with a six-goal lead.

Scheetz assisted on a goal by Tommy Coon to open the third period and a pair of goals from Carl Fischer. In between the Fischer goals, Scheetz scored on an assist from Coon.

“We just had the momentum and it really helped the nine freshmen on the team,” Scheetz said. “We’ve been working hard and we definitely deserved that one. It’s going to help going into Lakewood.”

The Rangers and Middies met twice during the season with each posting a 3-2 victory.

Parma and Olmsted Fall also met twice during the regular season with each winning once, so it was only fitting they were tied after two periods Monday.

The tie didn’t last long as Zach Sadowski scored on a power-play goal just 36 seconds into the third period and Steven Wilk scored after a hustling defensive play to give the Bulldogs the win in a meeting of Blue West Division rivals.

Joey Egan and Wilk scored in the first to give the ’Dogs (21-8) a 2-0 lead, but that disappeared when Parma’s Joey Gallo scored twice in the final 3:11 of the period to tie the score at 2 going to the first intermission.

The Redmen’s physical play took Olmsted Falls out of rhythm as the Bulldogs were called for four penalties, but they were able to fight through killing off each one, including a 5-on-3 advantage.

Olmsted Falls found itself on the plus-side of a man-advantage to start the third period and Sadowski made Parma (20-12-1) pay when the Redmen were caught in a defensive rotation mistake. The error left Sadowski all alone to rip a shot past Dustin Scott for a 3-2 lead.

“It was pretty shocking that they left me all alone on the ice,” Sadowski said. “I think they focused on Jake (Norman) and I slipped in there unnoticed.”

Wilk provided a huge two-goal cushion when he stole the puck right in front of the Redmen. Wilk spun with the puck and beat the Parma goalie at 11:10 to provide the final margin.

“(Wilk) has been a defensive forward all year,” Bulldogs coach Brett Thompson said. “Sometimes he burns you with plays and sometimes they pay off. That was a huge goal. That was really good.”
