BROOKLYN — The drought is over for Olmsted Falls.
The Bulldogs played solid from start to finish against Twinsburg in the Baron Cup III Tournament at the Brooklyn Recreation Center and rode a pair of goals from Zach Sadowski and the hot goaltending of Zach Snyder to win 4-1.
Olmsted Falls (20-7) advances to play Blue East Division champion West Geauga, which posted a 13-0 win over Garfield Heights on Monday. The two teams will face off Saturday at 1 p.m. back in Brooklyn.
“We came out with some good intensity and I think (the Tigers) were short-handed a little bit,” Olmsted Falls coach Brett Thompson. “We just kept forechecking them and I think we wore them down a little bit as the game wore on.”
Both teams took turns taking shots in the opening period with no scores. Falls prefers to put the puck on goal and look for the rebound.
Hunter Bradford had one of those shots, floating the puck in from the blue line, but somehow it eluded Twinsburg goalie Braden Susnik to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead with 4:19 left in the first period.
Dylan Aoki tied the score for the Tigers with seven minutes left in the second period, but unfortunately for Twinsburg (11-10-1), Olmsted Falls bounced back to take the lead for good.
Zach Sadowski scored the first of his two goals after another scramble in front of the net, taking a beauty of a pass from Jacob Norman from behind the net for a 2-1 lead. Sadowski gave his team breathing room with a power-play goal, going top-shelf on a backhand at 13:07 of the third period.
“(Twinsburg) crowded the net the entire game, so it was our job to crash the net and force them to make a mistake,” Sadowski said. “Jake gave me a great pass from behind the net on that first one.
“After all the years with Coach Thompson, it’s great to see all the hard work in practice paying off. We want to keep this going and build something great here at Olmsted Falls.”
Midview is also building, with 10 freshmen on the roster, and the youthful Middies came out flat against Cleveland Heights on Tuesday. They fell behind in the first period and never recovered in losing 3-1 in the Baron Cup II Tournament.
Cleveland Heights improved to 11-8-3 and faces the winner of Tuesday’s Western Reserve/Mayfield game Friday at 8 p.m.
“One of the good things for these 10 freshmen is the big guys out there with beards won’t be chasing them around next year,” Midview coach Rick Verlotti said. “It’s a great experience for those kids.”
Midview (11-14) looked tentative from the start as the Tigers held a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal and picked up the only score of the first period when Isaac Brown scored unassisted at 10:16.
The Tigers went up 3-0 on a pair goals from Conor Lewis at 12:10 and 5:15 of the second period. The second came on the power play.
In between the Lewis scores, the Middies had a few chances to get on the board but were stopped by Tigers’ goalie Trent Swain.
Kyle Kudela scored the final goal of the night to prevent the shutout, checking a Tiger player up against the boards, before taking the puck away scoring unassisted for the final margin.
