H.S. Wrestling: Brookside, Keystone roll to wins in PAC quad meet

SHEFFIELD -- The Stars were out Thursday night, and they took turns rolling over the Stripes.

Brookside and Keystone -- members of the Patriot Athletic Conference’s Stars Division — handed lopsided defeats to Columbia and Oberlin — PAC Stripes Division members -- in a conference quad meet that saw as many forfeits as matches wrestled.

Keystone’s David Gale was one of the few who managed to wrestle two matches — pinning Columbia’s Shane Garrow in the opener and Oberlin’s Jacob Lawrie in the nightcap.

“It was wonderful to get on the mat twice and it was even better to win both matches with pins,” Gale said. “It seems like you’re constantly getting forfeits (in PAC duals) and you’re not getting to work and show what you’ve been doing in the practice room. Don’t get me wrong, a win’s a win. But it’s always better to earn a win than have it given to you.”

The second wrestler to pick up a pair of “earned” victories was Brookside’s Cory Mills, who pinned Oberlin’s Kobe Fields in the first dual and Columbia’s Nick Jacobucci in the second.

“Coach (Brian) Behrendt told us that we were probably going to win these two dual meets tonight, but we had to go out there and wrestle like (our opponents) had a full team,” Mills said. “The coaches bumped me up (a couple of weight classes) this year and I know I have to go out there and do what they expect me to do.”

It was Senior Night at Brookside, and Mills -- a junior -- had to give Cardinals senior Ian Standen an assist for his victory over Jacobucci. Mills and Jacobucci were battling through a close match when Mills stuck the Columbia wrestler for a third-period pin.

“I do that move (Jacobucci tried on me) all the time in practice -- it’s kind of a fireman’s (carry) into a barrel roll,” Mills said. “So I just did what Ian Standen does against me when I try it -- I hooked his leg and got the cradle in.”

One of the most dominating performances of the night came from Brookside 220-pounder Ivan Mendoza, who pinned Oberlin’s Wesley Gallion and Columbia’s Alex Shumaker — both in under a minute.

“I was really prepared coming into the match,” Mendoza said. “I just wanted to get my wins and get out. Tonight was all for the seniors. They’ve put in one more year of hard work than me, so they deserved these wins.”

The fourth and final wrestler to get two wins on the mat — both first-period pins — was Keystone’s Corbin Chizmadia, who beat Shumaker in the first meet and Gallion in the second.

“Those wins felt good because I feel I’m slowly climbing that ladder (in the PAC),” Chizmadia said. “I’m getting prepared for the PAC Tournament and we have the state duals coming up. It’s crunch time … there’s no time for mistakes.”

Behrendt was happy to pick up the crossover wins, although they don’t figure into the Stars title. Brookside defeated Keystone earlier in the season, and has duals against Buckeye and Firelands remaining.

With the way the Cardinals looked Thursday, he feels his team might be the favorite in the big-school division.

“We stress during these conference matches that we have to wrestle as a team,” Behrendt said. “It’s not about individuals at this point of the season, that comes at sectionals and beyond. We go to each guy and we tell them that we’re looking for six points out of them -- because their team needs it.”

With the dual meet loss to the Cardinals, it’s unlikely Keystone will win the regular-season title. So the Wildcats are looking to capture the PAC Tournament championship and try to make another long run in the state duals. Keystone was the only Lorain County program to make it to Columbus in last year’s inaugural event.

“Everybody’s getting ready for the end of the year … it’s time to step up,” Keystone coach Jim Pycraft said. “We just take it one match at a time at this point. We know that we’re going to be wrestling every Saturday for the rest of the season.”
