Wrestling: Midview's Gabor wins two matches on senior night

EATON TWP. — It was senior night at Midview on Thursday but it was Rocky River that stole the show by defeating the Middies 48-19 and Avon 44-36 as part of a West Shore Conference double-dual quad meet.

Elyria Catholic, which only had five wrestlers in uniform, lost 60-12 to Midview and 69-10 to Avon.

It was a big night for Midview 132-pounder Josh Gabor, one of only two seniors on the Middies roster. He won his first match by forfeit and defeated Rocky River’s Jack Omori with an 11-2 major decision.

“I knew it was going to be a tough match,” Gabor said. “I started to get a little winded but I just kept constant pressure on him. Senior night was a big motivation for me. It always gets me more pumped up to wrestle at home.”

However, Gabor, who improved to 7-4, said he wasn’t satisfied with his performance.

“I know now that I have to work harder to keep from getting winded at the end of close matches,” he said.

Rocky River and Avon had the match of the night, with the Pirates needing five falls to pull away with the 44-36 win.

Avon freshman Kyle Burgess (132) picked up a win in his first varsity match by pinning Omori 12 seconds into the second period.

It was one of five falls in the match for Avon, including first-period pins by Paul Strum (195), Joe Trau (220) and Travis Leopold (160).

Leopold had to work harder for his second pin of the night, which came at the 4:32 mark against the Panthers’ Jerot Schill.

“Against Rocky River, I knew I had to get a good start because I had a tight match with him last season,” Leopold said. “I had to go for the pin because I knew we needed the team points. In that second match, he was a really strong opponent. I felt like I had to beat him to get my season off to a good start.”

Against Schill, Leopold held a slim 3-1 lead going into the final period, so he knew one mistake could have resulted in defeat.

“I felt like if he would have taken me down one more time he probably would have gotten the win,” said Leopold, who improved to 9-1. “I really felt like I needed that win going into the Bowling Green tournament this weekend.”

Avon coach Mark Porter knows his team still has plenty of work to do.

“The Rocky River match was tough,” he said. “We gave up a few pins and a tech fall — those points really added up fast — but we have some kids who are just coming back from injury and they aren’t in mid-season form yet. Give all the credit to Rocky River.

I thought they wrestled better than we did tonight.”

The Eagles will have to get healthy on the run with the toughest part of their schedule on the horizon.

“Wrestling is a tough sport for tough kids so there is no rest for the weary,” Porter said. “This weekend we’ll be at the Bowling Green duals wrestling 10 matches in two days.”

In addition to Gabor, Alec Forrer (160), Spencer Berthold (170) and Mitch Hasman (285) also had match wins for the Middies against Rocky River.
