Wrestling: Three from area earn berths in Greco Roman nationals in Fargo, N.D.

ELYRIA — Three Lorain County wrestlers are headed to the nationals in Fargo, N.D., while seven others are hoping to join them today.

Oberlin’s Kevin Vough (runner-up at 285), Grafton’s Alec Forrer (third at 160) and Elyria’s Mike Dolan (fourth at 138) all earned spots Saturday on the Ohio Cadet team heading to Fargo, N.D., for the Greco Roman national wrestling tournament in July.

“I really like Greco because it’s all about your standup and throwing,” said Forrer, who went 4-2 the past two years at the junior high state tournament. “I feel my strength is in my upper body more than my legs, and this can only help me when I begin high school wrestling.”

Vough lost a tough 1-0, 4-3 decision (scores are for each period) to Perrysburg sophomore Cale Bonner, a Division I state placer this season.

“I expected him to be strong, but I really hadn’t seen him at all,” Vough said. “But now I know what I have to work on so that I can beat him at the (high school) state tournament.”

Several county wrestlers went unbeaten through three rounds of the state freestyle tournament that concludes today. Elyria High junior Armando Torres — the Division I state runner-up at 113 pounds last season — won his only match, Pioneers teammate Ben Darmstadt went 2-0 and Amherst’s Christian Lough pinned his sole opponent.

“That first match is always a tough one because you have to get rid of the first-match jitters,” said Darmstadt, who won a 5-1, 6-0 decision over North Canton’s Garrett Neal. “The second match felt a lot better (a pin of Kirtland High’s Mike Calvert) and I felt really good about the way I wrestled today.”

Darmstadt is wrestling at 145 pounds after wrestling at 120 for the Pioneers just two months ago.

“I got up to 154 from 120,” Darmstadt said with a laugh. “I just got bigger and I’m going to just see how big I get before deciding on where I’ll wrestle (as a sophomore).

“(My teammates and I have) been planning our midweight lineup (for next season) a little bit because we have a few logjams in there.”

Taking losses but staying alive were Elyria’s Nico O’Dor and Taylor Workman, Firelands’ Angel Alexander and Amherst’s Dennis Breeding, while Elyria’s Dolan and J.T. Brown were eliminated after losing two matches.

O’Dor had the toughest opening match of the bunch, losing 0-4, 0-5 to Delta High’s Jake Spiess, who won the 106-pound state title in Division III last season.

“I always seem to face him in my first match,” O’Dor said. “He definitely has more experience at freestyle (wrestling) than me.”

O’Dor bounced back to pin Stow’s Kyle Jenkins — they split four matches during the high school season — and pull out a 5-1, 4-0 decision over Jake Henderson from the BC Brawlers club.

“I don’t feel pressure at all (after a loss),” O’Dor said. “I expect to get a spot (to Fargo today).”

Workman also started off with a tough draw, losing both periods by a point to Brecksville’s Quinton Hiles, the 160-pound state runner-up in Division I last season. Alexander’s opener — an 0-7, 0-5 defeat — came at the hands of Painesville Riverside’s Nick Boggs, who placed fifth at 132 in the Division I state tournament.

Vough is also vying for a spot on the freestyle team, but didn’t get to wrestle his opener Saturday.
