LORAIN — Midview’s Zach Frambach put the lone blemish on another stellar opening night for St. Edward at the Division I sectional tournament Friday at Lorain High School.
Tied at 1 after regulation, Frambach took down Robbie Rodgers with 20 seconds left and piled up five points for a 6-1 overtime decision at 160 pounds to advance to today’s semifinals.
St. Edward sent 13 of 14 wrestlers to the semifinals. Frambach was one of four Middies to advance.
“It was just whoever had the better shot defense,” Frambach said. “You gotta outwork kids sometimes. Nobody really dominated there. I wrestled with him all summer, so I was definitely happy to beat him. He was definitely better than me during the summer.”
Avon and North Ridgeville led Lorain County schools, sending five to the semifinals. They also combined to have three wrestlers go 2-0 on a night with only 10 first-round matches.
The Rangers’ Ricky Gordi advanced with a pin and a 4-2 decision at 145, while Tommy Wendling won his matches with a pin and a 12-5 decision at 152.
“I didn’t wrestle varsity at the beginning of the season,” Wendling said, “and throughout the season I’ve been working on stuff that I needed to. It feels good to see it pay off.”
Avon’s Jake Delorge had two pins to reach the semifinals, his second coming 5:27 in.
“It was a tougher match than I thought,” Delorge said. “I came into it and got the pin. It ultimately went well.”
St. Edward’s Chance Driscoll (126) also went 2-0 Friday and Sal Corrao secured a 10-2 major decision over Lorain’s Markus Cruz a 113. Corrao is an Avon resident.
“I stuck to what my coaches taught me and it’s paid off,” Corrao said. “My 15 losses came to kids ranked in the top three in their state or ranked nationally.”
Lorain placed four wrestlers in the semifinals: Devione Edwards (106), Xavier Edwards (120), Eli Garcia (138) and Luther Washington (160).
Avon Lake’s Zach Klima (113), Joey Bernosky (126) and Tyler Mayer (152) also advanced.
