ELYRIA — Prior to Saturday night’s non-conference dual meet against Olmsted Falls, Elyria’s wrestling program honored its seniors.
Ironically, it was the sophomores and juniors who stole the show for the Pioneers, who defeated the Bulldogs 46-22 to improve to 12-4 in dual meets.
Of the five seniors who wrestled in their final matches in the home gym, only two were victorious — 132-pounder Brandon Egnor and 145-pounder Alex Parker. Both were by major decision.
But all three of the Pioneers’ pinfalls and their lone technical fall came by underclassmen. Junior Armando Torres (120) picked up a 16-0 technical fall, while juniors Taylor Workman (170) and Connor Kamczyc (195) and sophomore Tyler Giorgini (220) all had first-period pins.
“The kids have been working hard, and some of these kids did a really nice job tonight,” Elyria coach Erik Burnett said. “But there are some things that we’re not quite getting right. We’ll have to make some adjustments while we’re working over these next few weeks and make some improvements.
“The improvements in some areas were there, but the improvements in other areas weren’t. But we know what we need to work on and we’ll keep working and keep figuring out how to get these guys better in certain areas.”
Burnett singled out sophomore 126-pounder Darrion Overall for his performance Saturday. Against Chase DuPratt, a state qualifier who was in only his second match following knee surgery, Overall won 1-0, getting the only point he needed with an escape to start the third period.
“Overall did a great job and he’s been doing a great job all year,” Burnett said. “That kid he wrestled was very good. It’s a great win for Darrion. He just keeps making progress. That’s all you can ask for. We have to keep making progress, and it’s nice to see a kid rewarded when he makes that kind of progress that you ask for.”
Egnor’s 15-4 major decision over Adam Salti capped a five-match win streak for the Pioneers that extended their lead to 30-3.
“It’s kind of sad, but it was good to end it with a win as a team and individually,” Egnor said of Senior Night. “It felt good hearing people cheer. There were more people here than usual, which was nice.”
Following a short intermission, Parker started the second half of the dual with a 10-1 major decision over L.J. Yurick to increase Elyria’s lead to 34-9.
“It’s kind of sad knowing that this is my last year,” Parker said. “That just means that I’ve got to put everything together.”
The Bulldogs answered with a pin by Austin Balnius (152) and an 8-6 decision by Mike Hansinger (160) to cut the lead to 34-18 and stay mathematically alive. However, Workman’s pin in 1:02 over Mike Iller clinched the win for the Pioneers.
Burnett had good things to say about all the seniors, including 138-pounder Chad Shaffer, 152-pounder Kevin Villa and heavyweight T.J. Halstead. However, he singled out Egnor, whose mother, Dawn, was called out to the mat and honored by Burnett just before the final match for her years of support.
“The Egnor family has been with us a long time,” Burnett said. “We’re going to miss those Egnors. Brandon Egnor, Cody Egnor, Phillip Egnor, Mr. and Mrs. Egnor … their kids were great wrestlers for us and they were phenomenal supportive parents all those years. I’m glad we were able to do that for Mrs. Egnor tonight. Hopefully, Brandon can make a nice run for us through the postseason.”
