Wrestling: Clearview finishes fifth at Midpark tournament

MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS — When it came to the Lorain County contingent at Saturday’s 12th annual Midpark Len Pariano Wrestling Tournament, Clearview was head and shoulders above the rest.

The Clippers advanced five wrestlers to the finals — with  Matt Hollingsworth (138 pounds) and Derrick Foster (152) winning individual titles — and finished fifth, only 1.5 points behind Cloverleaf (130-128.5) in the 14-team tournament.

Stow won with 203.5 points, with Hudson (145) and Midpark  (144) rounding out the top five.

“We battled some injuries so we only brought seven kids out,” Clearview coach Jason Steadman said. “So to have five of those seven reach the finals is a great thing. These are the five that we’ve been telling all year, ‘All you’ve got to do is believe.’ That’s a big thing with our kids. We believe in them. Everybody else believes in them. But they don’t believe in themselves.”

Just prior to his title match, senior Hollingsworth had just watched his twin brother Mike (132) lose to Cloverleaf’s Mark Heidelman, 7-2. Matt came close to joining his brother on the second spot on the podium.

Leading 3-1, Hollingsworth went for a shot with 10 seconds left and wound up being taken down by Cloverleaf’s Anthony Kozma, tying the score at 3. Just before time expired, Hollingsworth used a move called a Peterson to reverse Kozma to score the winning points and claim his first tournament title of the year.

“I always want my brother to do well, but whatever he does, I just try to block it out and focus on my match,” Matt said. “I just tried to stay solid the whole match and not do anything stupid.”

Two weight classes later, Foster, a junior, was leading Midpark’s Chris Weber 4-0 in the second period before Weber injured his shoulder and could not continue. That gave Foster the title by default.

“Last year, I came here and got fifth place, so to come back here and become a champion feels great,” Foster said. “This allows me to show the ability that I have and show what I’ve been working on.”

Divante Holt (182) and Deion Arnold (285) were runners-up for the Clippers. Holt lost to Stow’s Joe Kollar, 4-2, while Arnold fell to Cloverleaf’s Mark Salamon, 2-1.

The only other area individual champ was Brookside junior Ian Standen (21-3), who went 3-0 in at 145 with two pins.. He claimed his first-ever tournament title with a pin of Hudson’s Braden Wright in 1:49.

“This means a whole lot to me,” Standen said. “I’ve been waiting forever to become a tournament champion. Besides the Vermilion Tournament (which is in a round-robin format), this is the first time I’ve ever gone through a tournament undefeated and placed first in the whole thing.”

Standen helped the Cardinals finish 10th as he was one of five Brookside wrestlers to place in the top six, joining Aiden Wonder (sixth, 120), Devin French (third, 126), Steve Horvath (fifth, 152) and Ivan Mendoza (fifth, 220).

“I think Ian took third or fourth here last year, and coming in, my team’s been on a good high,” Brookside coach Brian Behrendt said. “We didn’t wrestle as well as we would have liked to against Clearview Thursday, but we were pumped up coming in here.”

Avon Lake (eighth) led all area teams with six overall placers in the top six — Anthony Gerome (fourth, 106), Zach Klima (fifth, 113), Chris Chakirelis (fourth, 120), Joey Bernosky (fifth, 126), Tyler Mayer (third, 152) and Jason Barnicle (third, 160).

“We entered six guys, and everybody placed,” Avon Lake coach Nick Mayer said. “We’re excited about it because we have a thin team and we’re in a rebuilding period with a new coaching staff and a bunch of youth.”

Columbia (11th, 61) and the Elyria White (13th, 50.5) rounded out area entrants.
