NORTH RIDGEVILLE — Wellington freshman Brittany Mariast scored a first-half goal with the Dukes attacking into a stiff wind Saturday afternoon.
With a 1-0 lead and the wind at their backs the second half, the Dukes added four goals, including another by Mariast, and cruised to a 5-0 non-conference victory over Lake Ridge. For the top-seeded
Dukes (12-1-2), it was a tuneup for their Division III Rocky River sectional opener later this week. The Lions fell to 5-8-2.
Mariast said the wind, which gusted to 30 mph or more, was Wellington’s ally.
“It was more to our advantage in the second half, because we didn’t have to worry about the ball flying everywhere,” said Mariast, who scored her 13th and 14th goals of the season. “We could pass easier and quicker.”
Her first goal came on an assist by junior Grace Dooley, who took control of a corner kick by Julia Marks, another freshman, in the 34th minute. It was Dooley’s seventh assist. Marks, whose defensive work was conspicuous, said she was just following instructions when she put her corner kick into a crowd near the front of the Lions’ goal.
“Abbey (assistant coach Golden) told me to aim it at the far end of the 18 so the wind would let it curve in,” Marks said. “So when it curved in, I saw Grace, Jacoby (Ziegler) and Brittany (Mariast) all going toward it and I was like, ‘That’s gonna be a goal.’”
And it was.
The Dukes took a 2-0 lead early in the second half when Ziegler, the senior scoring leader, nailed her 29th goal of the season. That’s tops statewide in Division III. Barely two minutes later, in the 50th minute, Mariast struck again, this time on junior Katie Rosemark’s assist.
With a nice pass from Ziegler — whose 16 assists also lead the team — sophomore Elizabeth Bowman made it 4-0 with her second goal of the year in the 64th minute. Rosemark ended the scoring with an unassisted goal of her own in the 78th minute.
The Lions got off three first-half shots, two by Kayla Daniel, who put the second right at Wellington goalkeeper Hannah Huelsman, who handled it routinely. They created another chance in the 56th minute and Sam Potoczak’s hard shot was on target, but Huelsman again made the save.
Lake Ridge narrowly missed an opportunity in the 67th minute, but Sydney Clark’s crossing pass was a little wide of the mark, and Potoczak just missed the left side of the Wellington net less than a minute later.
“I thought we played pretty good soccer for the conditions we had today,” Wellington coach Kevin Ziegler said. “I told the girls we were going to attack into the wind in the first half and try to gain an advantage going into the second half. It worked out pretty well.”
