Chris Sito named Elyria Catholic softball coach

Chris Sito, a familiar figure on area diamonds for many years, is the new softball coach at Elyria Catholic.

Sito, 47, was named Friday to succeed Brian Daw, who retired last month after five seasons. Sito's appointment was announced by Mike Wisnor on his first official day as EC's athletic director.

"The Sito family name in softball speaks for itself," Wisnor said. "Chris knows the game inside and out and we're confident he's the one to take us to the next level. Lorain County is a softball hotbed and we'd like Elyria Catholic to be as competitive as the most successful schools in the county."

Sito has coached at various levels, including two years at Elyria High, where he compiled a 23-13 record in the 1987-88 seasons. The Pioneers were 15-4 in '87. Coincidentally, he succeeded his sister, Jan Sito, who coached the Pioneers to a 14-7 record in 1986 and who also coached softball at Elyria Catholic.

He has coached softball and baseball teams in Elyria East Little League for years. Currently, he is also the league's softball director. He was a force in merging the softball operations of Elyria's East, North and West Little Leagues in 2001.

"One of the questions asked of me was, 'What's your goal?'" Sito said. "My goal with any team I've ever coached has been to win the championship at the highest level of competition. People will always say you have to be realistic and see where you are. I truly believe it's the coach's job to find the area where the kids can succeed.

"I am definitely aggressive in baserunning, and what that means is we're always looking for the next base. When you're on first, you're not happy you're on first. You're looking quickly to find out how you're getting to second.

"That same philosophy goes to defense. If the other team has bases loaded and you bobble a groundball, then you have to be looking for what opportunities are still available."

Sito is a 1982 graduate of Elyria Catholic, where he played football, baseball and was on the freshman basketball team. He won the annual Lou Rotunda Award as a senior. He is also a graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College, where he played baseball for three seasons and football for one, until he tore an ACL.

He comes from a well-known and athletic family. His brother Ken has been a successful area golfer. Another brother, Dave, starred in football at EC, and his brother Jack starred in baseball and football at Elyria High.

Their sister, Jan, played fastpitch softball before it became a popular sport for women, and also starred in basketball and volleyball. She has been a coach and official in all three sports, including varsity softball at the former Southview High.

Chris's daughter, Kristin, is a former Elyria High softball star who recently graduated from Niagara University, where she played softball for four years. His niece, Tess, is a former two-time All-American softball player at Elyria High and starred at Cleveland State for two seasons. She will transfer to Georgia in the fall.

Sito and his wife, Debbie, have two daughters, Kristin and Jessica, and two sons, Mike and Eric.
