High school football: EC rewarded for big season as All-Lorain County lists released

It was quite a debut season for Elyria Catholic football coach Brian Fox.

Not only did he guide the Panthers back to the playoffs for the first time since 2010, EC also shared the Great Lakes Conference championship with Bay, its first league title since the same year.

The Panthers reaped the rewards Thursday when the Lorain County Football Coaches Association officially released its 2018 all-county teams.

Two EC seniors picked up player of the year awards in Divisions IV through VIII and Fox was named co-Coach of the Year with Clearview’s Mike Collier.

Jack Decker was named Most Valuable Offensive Lineman and Griffin Davies earned top defensive lineman honors. Decker was a key cog in an explosive EC offense while Davies led the Panthers with 20ᄑ tackles for a loss, nine sacks and had 186 total tackles.

“It’s not really surprising that they both won their respective awards,” Fox said. “They’re great players, they have great frames and their work effort in the offseason took them to the next level.”

As for his award, Fox kept it humble.

“It’s kind of cool because awards like this follow success,” Fox said after leading the Panthers to a 9-3 record and to the Division V regional semifinals. “I try to tell people … I did way less than you think I did because we were really talented. We brought in a great senior class — a lot of juniors came back into the program. It’s exciting to get awards like this but it’s definitely more about the team having success than me going out and changing the game of football.”

Columbia’s Brandon Coleman didn’t do too badly either. The senior running back broke the Lorain County career rushing record with 5,148 and helped the Raiders go 7-4 and make it to the Division VI playoffs.

Now he can add Lorain County Most Valuable Offensive Back to his resume.

“I’m very grateful to win the award,” Coleman said. “Huge thanks to my teammates for blocking for me. Thanks to my coaches who put me in the right position to win this award. I want to say thank you to the community over the last four years.”

Coleman had 148 carries for 1,698 yards and 23 touchdowns this season.

“We’re excited that he was able to get that award,” Columbia coach Jason Ward said. “He’s a great kid. Anybody that has got to know him, knows he’s an enjoyable guy to be around. Good things happen to good people and we’re excited to see what happens moving forward.”

Joining Collier as award winners from Clearview was senior David Renftle, who picked up top defensive back honors.

The Clippers went 10-2 and advanced to the Division IV regional semifinals. They also won their second straight Patriot Athletic Conference Stripes Division title, going undefeated in league play for the second year in a row.

In the big school class (Divisions I through III), Amherst senior running back Khennedy Scagliozzo was named top offensive back after rushing for 1,854 yards and 28 touchdowns.

“I’m very happy for Khennedy,” Amherst coach Mike Passerrello said. “He had a great year. He had a great career at Amherst. This is something for him to end on a good note.”

Avon Lake senior Luke Fedders was named top defensive back in the big school division, while Matt Kostelnik was named the top coach after leading the Shoremen to a 10-2 record, a share of the Southwestern Conference championship with Avon and to the regional semifinals in Division II.

“I feel humble for winning this award,” Kostelnik said. “The kids played hard all year and I couldn’t be even more proud of them.”

Avon, which is 12-1 and in the Division II state semifinals for the second straight season, had two players of the year. Senior Michael Bergen was named the top offensive lineman for one of the highest-scoring teams in the county, while senior Jack Roesch was named the top defensive lineman after racking up 52 tackles and a team-high eight sacks.
