Changes are coming to the Elyria Catholic football program.
The school announced in a press release Sunday that it is parting ways with football coach Dave Stupka. The Panthers wrapped up a disappointing 3-7 season Friday with a 32-10 loss to Rocky River. It was the Panthers’ worst season since 2003, when it also went 3-7.

Stupka was 15-15 in three seasons at EC. During that time, the Panthers went 8-10 in the Great Lakes Conference and failed to qualify for the OHSAA playoffs in any of those three seasons.
While Elyria Catholic, a Division V school, struggled at times against the bigger Division II and III schools in the GLC, Stupka had his team in almost every game. Nine of the Panthers’ 15 losses in his tenure were by seven points or less.
Stupka also produced 12 all-Ohio players after the 2015 and ’16 seasons.
“We are appreciative of Coach Stupka’s service to our football program and players over the last three seasons,” Elyria Catholic athletic director Jack Duffy said in a press release. “We wish him well in his future endeavors.”
Stupka is also a math teacher at the school.
Elyria Catholic was Stupka’s fourth head coaching job. He was the head coach at Chanel High School in Bedford from 2004-07 where he went 20-23 and led the Firebirds to two playoff appearances. He was named Ohio’s Division V coach of the year in 2006.
He then spent three seasons at Midpark, going 9-21, and two seasons at Lutheran West, where he went 11-9 before coming to Elyria Catholic as an assistant coach in 2014 and taking over head-coaching duties when Mike Polevacik resigned prior to he 2015 season.
Elyria Catholic is the only Lorain County school to win three state football championships but the program has fallen on tough times in recent years with just one postseason appearance since 2007.
Attempts to reach Stupka were unsuccessful.
