LORAIN — After a heartbreaking loss to Midview in Week 1, Lorain got just what it needed — a big win.
The Titans scored the first six times they had the ball against Cleveland JFK and rolled to a 54-0 non-conference win Friday night at George Daniel Field.
Lorain dominated on both sides of the ball in the opening two quarters, churning out
280 yards of offense while the swarming defense destroyed the Eagles, holding them to negative 34 yards before the game went to a running clock at the start of the third quarter.
The Titans finished the night with 461 total yards while holding Cleveland JFK to minus-33 yards, including an astounding minus-59 rushing.
The opening two possessions gave the crowd a glimpse of what was to come when JFK snapped the ball over the punter’s head back to the
1-yard line after the first series.
Sophomore running back Daylin Dower scored on the next play, as the “drive” took all of three seconds for a 7-0 lead.
Dower was just getting started, as he ran the ball nine times for 103 yards and three touchdowns in the first half.
“The Midview game hurt, but we had to pull everything back together tonight,” Dower said. “It was a lot of fun watching the young guys in the second half do such a great job. The coaches do a great job getting playing time for the younger kids.”
The Titans had a 59-yard scoring run by Dower called back on the second possession, only to finish the drive with a 25-yard scoring strike from Justin Sturgill to Jermele Nolan on a fourth-down play.
That was the first of four touchdown passes for the senior quarterback, who completed six of 12 passes for 158 yards before being lifted after the opening drive of the second half.
“Last week was such a tough loss, but we knew we could push through that and come to play well tonight,” Sturgill said. “My offensive line made it easy for me to get the ball in the right places tonight.”
Lorain got nine points in the span of 10 seconds to start the second quarter. The Titans got a safety on a bad punt snap out of the end zone, and on the ensuing free kick Zion Cross sprinted 66 yards for a 23-0 lead with 11:46 left in the first half.
Sturgill went through the air for the next two Lorain touchdowns, going 21 yards to Cross on fourth-and-goal after a penalty wiped out a scoring run by Dakota Mincy. Marcus Ellington hauled in the third scoring pass of the half for Sturgill from 10 yards for a 35-0 lead with 5:30 still left in the second quarter.
Following yet another mistake on a JFK punt snap, Dower needed just one play to go
30 yards after patiently waiting for his blockers to lead the way for his third score of the half and a 41-0 lead going into halftime.
Lorain added two scores in the second half, with Tyshawn Lighty going 80 yards on a catch-and-run on the first play of the third quarter and Adrian Mills taking a toss to the right
“It’s great for our kids and I felt like the kids came out and played pretty good football,” coach Dave McFarland said. “We’re still a young team and we’re going to have to continue to improve if we want to get better.”
