High school football: 3 area players, 4 coaches pick up top district honors

Midview has a big football game coming up Friday, but the Middies were able to do some celebrating Wednesday.

As were a bunch of area football players and teams thanks to the All-Northeast Ohio District Football Team which was released by The Associated Press.

The Middies, who play Nordonia in the regional final Friday night at Brunswick High School, picked up two big awards as sophomore quarterback Dustin Crum was named Offensive Player of the Year and first-year coach D.J. Shaw was named Coach of the Year in Division II.

Those weren’t the only major awards for the area, however, as Lorain’s Rashod Berry was named Defensive Player of the Year in Division I and Columbia’s Brandon Heidecker was named Offensive Player of the Year in Division V. Lorain’s Dave McFarland (D-I), Keystone’s Rob Clarico (D-IV) and Columbia’s Jason Ward (D-V) were all named top coaches in their divisions.

The common denominator among the area award winners? They all are part of programs that reached the postseason.

Midview went 10-0 overall and 7-0 in the regular season to win the final West Shore Conference championship under Shaw and with Crum at the helm of the offense.

“It’s a huge honor for our school and our team,” Shaw said. “There are so many great coaches and so many great players in our region and our area and it’s a huge, huge honor. Even though they’re individual honors, I considering them team honors because without our team, we don’t get recognized in that way.”

Crum has thrown for 3,194 yards through 12 games, completing 226 of 338 passes with 38 touchdowns and six interceptions. He’s also the team’s leading rusher, gaining 1,163 on 201 carries (5.8-yard average) with 18 touchdowns. He’s gained 4,357 all-purpose yards for the 12-0 Middies.

“It’s sweet,” Crum said. “It just shows that I’ve got great players around me that helped me and put me in good situations to succeed. And it shows I’ve got great coaches that helped get the absolute best out of us.

“Thanks to my parents and my teammates who helped me succeed this year. My offensive line has given me a great pocket all year. They’ve done a great job for us this year, as have our receivers. They’ve made some great plays for us.”

Shaw is proud of his quarterback.

“Dustin’s had a great year,” he said. “Even though he’s only a sophomore, he’s getting some recognition. It’s not sophomore football, it’s varsity football, and I’m glad people are recognizing him for having such a great year. It shows that it really doesn’t matter what grade you are in.”

Besides Crum, the Middies had five first-team selections in wide receiver Logan Bolin, tight end Dimitri Redwood, offensive lineman Devin Smith, linebacker Kyle Troutman and defensive back Dante Redwood. Running back Brett Zupancic was a second-team selection and Daimion Mahone and Trey Preston made honorable mention.

The Titans went 7-3 in the regular season, becoming the first Lorain school to qualify for the Division I postseason in 30 years. They lost 49-34 to fourth-seeded Mentor, a two-time defending state runner-up, in the first round.

“It’s certainly a great honor but I’m not sure I’m deserving,” said McFarland, in his first year at Lorain. “These honors for our Lorain football team should be attributed to the performance of our student-athletes in the classroom and on the football field. We’re trying to help our kids understand that people with character have a chance to achieve great things.”

McFarland shared the coach of the year honor with Berea-Midpark’s Ray Hradek. Ironically, McFarland was the final coach at Midpark before the merger with Berea two years ago.

Berry, a senior defensive end/wide receiver who has orally committed to Ohio State, had six sacks, six forced fumbles, 11 tackles for a loss, two passes batted down, one interception and one safety.

“I could not be happier for Rashod, our team and the Lorain community,” McFarland said. “Rashod’s achievement represents his dedication as well as his team’s commitment to excelling in the community, classroom and football field. He has transformed our program, giving young athletes a clear example of what it takes to be a complete athlete and Ohio State recruit. Our entire community is proud of Rashod and his 2014 football team.”

Clarico, in his 11th year coaching Keystone, guided the Wildcats (8-2, 6-1) to their second straight Patriot Athletic Conference Stars Division title. That was good enough to be the seventh seed in Division IV, Region 12. While the Wildcats were competitive in their first-ever playoff game, they fell 40-32 to No. 2-seeded Bellevue.

“I am humbled by this honor,” said Clarico, who shared the award with Benedictine’s Joe Schaefer. “It’s truly a team award. My assistant coaches and the players put in a ton of hard work over the last year. It was special to be rewarded with our first playoff appearance. I’m happy for the school and community. Thank you to all the voters for recognizing our accomplishments.”

Heidecker, a senior left tackle, orally committed to Toledo before the season, making him the first Columbia football player to go Division I. He helped the Raiders go 9-1, 7-0 in the regular season to win the PAC Stripes Division and qualify for the postseason for the third straight year.

“I think it’s surprising,” Heidecker said. “It’s a huge thing for me. For the whole state of Ohio in Division V, there’s a lot of good players out there. I’m pretty excited right now. From last year when we had Jay Banyasz and we went 10-0 through my sophomore year when we went 10-1 and won our first home playoff game, I think our program is getting the recognition it deserves.

“This is great, but I’ve just got to stay hungry and keep my head above through thick and thin. I’ve had to fight for everything that I’ve wanted and I will continue to fight.”

Ward has turned Columbia into one of the top programs in Lorain County during his nine years on the job.

“Certainly, the recognition that comes along like this is a byproduct of consistency,” Ward said. “We were 9-2 this year, 10-1 last year, 10-1 the year before, 9-3 the year before that, so we haven’t lost a whole lot of games over the last four or five years. I think this is the reward for the longevity for a lot of hard work by a lot of people.

“It pays to have a great staff that’s extremely hard working, very loyal, that lay it on the line for our kids and our program every day. Any time an award like this comes along, I look at them as team awards. The one thing that’s stayed consistent over my nine-year career is the guys that I’ve had on staff.

There’s no award that I, or any of our players, win that can’t be directly traced to the amount of time and effort our assistant coaches at Columbia get.”
