DAYTON — Midview’s Cody Callaway picked up Most Outstanding Player honors Saturday after leading the North to a 23-14 win in the Division I-III North-South Classic at Welcome Stadium.
The quarterback’s big play was a 62-yard TD connection with Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary’s Parris Campbell on the final play of the first half.
In the Division IV-VII game, the North came up just short, falling 28-27 in overtime.
Black River’s Andrew Vaughn scored a TD on a 10-yard run in OT.
Other area players who made the games were linebacker Kevin Maloney, defensive lineman Shaun Traine, offensive lineman Walter Rauterkus and wide receiver Braeden Friss from Avon and Avon Lake offensive lineman Ben Oxley in Division I-III.
In Division IV-VIII, the other area players were Columbia quarterback Jay Banyasz and Elyria Catholic offensive lineman Dakota Tallman.
Avon’s Mike Elder was a coach for the Division I-III North team, while Columbia’s Jason Ward was a coach in the Division IV-VIII game.
Avon Lake, EC ranked
Two local teams debuted in the top 20 in this week’s first Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association state poll of the season.
Avon Lake is 18th in Division I and Elyria Catholic is tied for 18th in Division III. In Division II, Keystone did not make the top 20 but did receive six votes.
