High school football: Avon travels to Huron to take on Perrysburg in playoffs

What began as a robust field of five area playoff teams has shrunk to just one.

A familiar one, true, but one just the same: the Avon Eagles.

Avon, which went undefeated in the regular season to claim the West Shore Conference title, finish third in the Division II state poll and grab the second seed in Region 4, opened the postseason in strong fashion last Friday with a 38-14 home win over Toledo St. Francis de Sales.

That earned them a second-round matchup with sixth-seeded Perrysburg (9-2) this Friday night at 7:30 at Kalahari Field at Huron Memorial Stadium.

Perrysburg downed third-seeded Akron Ellet 28-21 in the first round.

The other regional semifinal features top-seeded Highland (11-0), which ousted Avon Lake 28-21 in the first round, against fourth-seeded Massillon Washington (9-2) at the University of Akron.

Avon, which has made the playoffs the last four years and five of the last six, made it to the regional finals last season and to the state finals in 2011.

Besides Avon Lake, the other area teams to bow out over the weekend were Elyria, which fell 16-15 to Stow in Division I; Columbia, which lost 62-28 to Chippewa in Division V; and Black River, which lost 51-42 to Fairless, also in Division V.
