Sliman's bringing new name, feel to Lorain County all-star football game

Lorain County football fans could end up with more than just an enjoyable game Saturday night at the Sliman’s East West Football Classic — the new moniker of the county’s annual all-star game.

The Amherst car dealership has signed on for a five-year sponsorship of the game, and will be giving two attendees the chance to win $10,000 during halftime.

“Paul (Sliman) has always been involved with the schools in Lorain County,” Sliman’s sales manager Jim Bucher said. “Both of his daughters went to Amherst and he likes to pick local charities to support. So we thought this would be a good opportunity to get

Sliman’s involved with the county sports scene.”

Bucher said they’ve had about 30 people sign up for the “Pass, Punt and Kick Contest” that will be held during halftime at Midview High School. He expects that number to double, maybe triple, by the time the two participants are selected at the end of the first quarter.

If picked, the contestant will start from behind one end zone, throw the football as far as they can, punt from the spot the ball lands and then try to make a field goal from the spot the punt lands.

“It’s all in the kick,” Bucher said. “If a person can throw the ball far and if they can punt the ball straight, it’s the field goal try that takes the real skill.”

According to the promotion’s release: Anyone is eligible that has not been a professional, semi-professional, Olympian, collegiate or high school former football, soccer or rugby player or coach within the last five years.

Sliman’s plans to put a contest sign-up booth at the front gate of the game, too. If the first contestant wins the $10,000, the second person will not get an opportunity to compete.

“We felt this was a great way to get more people out to watch the kids play,” Bucher said. “Beside the contest, we also supplied the 70 jerseys, the coaches’ shirts and T-shirts for all the players.”

Before the halftime contest, retired coaches Dave Dlugosz and Chuck Morgan will be inducted into the Lorain County Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

“Both are local-boy-makes-good kind of things,” LCFCA secretary/treasurer Rob Given said. “Chuck starred at Firelands and came back to coach the Falcons, and Dave played for Avon Lake and came back to coach the Shoremen.”
