H.S. Football: Midview welcomes EC into WSC with rout

EATON TWP. - Midview passed well in the first half, ran well in the second half and played defense superbly throughout the evening.

All that good stuff added up to the Middies giving new West Shore Conference member Elyria Catholic a rude welcome to the league Friday.

Midview pounded the Panthers 34-7.

"What we coaches are seeing is how we get better and better as the game progresses," Midview coach Bill Albright said. "I like the mixture we have of offense and defense and special teams. They all played well tonight."

Midview (3-1, 1-0 WSC) passed for 137 yards in the first half as Cody Callaway completed 10 of 19 attempts.

The Middies gained only 23 yards rushing in the first two quarters, with 18 of them coming on the last drive before halftime.

The running game got going in the second half as Midview gained 131 yards on 26 carries and passed only six times.

Jacob Bennett gained 73 of his game-high 80 yards and scored two touchdowns in the second half.

"We want to throw the ball out of our spread offense," Albright said. "Our linemen saw some matchups we liked, so we took advantage of them."

The defense forced six turnovers, some of which proved disastrous for Elyria Catholic (2-2, 0-1).

A fumble recovery at the Midview 14-yard line killed a drive on the Panthers' first possession after freshman running back Justin Taylor's 60-yard run set up Elyria Catholic at the 15.

An interception set up Midview's first touchdown as Eddie Brezina picked off Jeremy Holley's pass and returned it 24 yards to the Panthers 40-yard line.

Zach Bates recovered a fumble on the second-half kickoff, giving Midview the ball at the EC 38. Five plays later it became 20-7 as Callaway ran for the second of his two rushing TDs.

The Middies also sacked Holley three times.
