Boys basketball: Holy Name has answer for every Clearview comeback, ousts Clippers in Division II district semifinal

WESTLAKE — Clearview got stuck playing catch-up against Holy Name on Thursday night.

They never did.

The Clippers got down early and kept fighting back, but just couldn’t get over the hump in a 73-58 loss in a Westlake Division II district semifinal.

Holy Name (18-5), which advances to play Vermilion in the district final Saturday at 7 p.m., led the entire game after answering an early Daimon Knowles’ 3-pointer with a 9-0 run to go up 11-3. After the Clippers went on a 7-2 run to make it a three-point game, the Green Wave outscored the Clippers 9-6 to grab a six-point lead after the first.

Clearview (18-6) cut the lead to four after a Gerrell Williams’ driving layup early in the second quarter, but Holy Name kicked off a 7-0 spurt that wasn’t answered until Eric Burkey’s 3-pointer almost four minutes later.

Williams scored eight in the quarter after starting the game 0-for-4.

Lawrynce Johnson and Brad Karn scored all of Holy Name’s points in the second. Johnson hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 of his 22 points, while Karn scored seven of his game-high 25 to push the Green Wave lead to 40-32 at halftime.

“They just kept making shots, at first they were hitting everything,” Williams said. “We came out slow, even in the second half we came out a little slow, so it was hard to come back after they took that big lead.”

Williams led the Clippers with 20 points, including 10 in the third quarter when Clearview cut the lead to seven.

But Holy Name answered again, hitting back-to-back 3-pointers.

Williams got the crowd excited when he threw down a vicious two-handed dunk with 32 seconds left to cut the deficit back to single digits.

“It was really hard,” Williams said. “I tried to play my hardest and give it my all. It just didn’t come out the way we wanted it to.”

The Clippers also got 10 points from Jason Young and Knowles, who attempted just four 3-point shots, making two of them. Young started the game strong, scoring six in the first quarter. Burkey finished with six points on a 1-for-12 night shooting.

“Holy Name played well,” Clearview coach John Szalay said. “We ran into a pretty good basketball team and we didn’t play our best. At this level, you’ve got to put together your best. They kind of took it to us early and we weren’t as aggressive as I’d like us to be, at either end.

“They were just a load for us tonight. We could never get over the hump. We kept fighting, but then they would knock down a big shot. We weren’t aggressive enough.”

Holy Name sealed the game in the fourth quarter, going 8-for-12 from the free throw line as Clearview got in foul trouble. The Green Wave shot an efficient 4-for-4 from the field.

Will Davis scored eight of his 16 in the final quarter, which included a monster dunk with 23 seconds left.

“This is probably the best four quarters overall that we’ve played this year,” Holy Name coach Jeff Huber said. “They made a couple runs at us where we got sloppy with the ball, and Clearview is the type of team that can really spiral on you, but every time we were able regain our composure.”
