Longtime area coaches Art Daniels and John Szalay will be among the recipients of the 2012-13 Bob Arnzen Award presented by the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association at the upcoming state championship games.
The Arnzen awards are presented in honor of the legendary Delphos St. John High School coach, who amassed 676 wins in his 43-year coaching career for the Blue Jays and is given to coaches who have coached for 20 or more consecutive years at the same school at any level.
Daniels, who along with four others will receive their awards during Saturday’s girls championship games, has been a longtime assistant coach at Westlake High School.
For six seasons from 1987-92, he was the boys head varsity coach at Elyria High School. Current Pioneers boys coach Brett Larrick was one of the members of his last boys team at the school.
Other girls coaches to be honored are Dave Hoffman and Jamie Lewis (both from Delphos Jefferson High School), Jeff Nichols (Bowling Green High School) and Chris Rump (Miller City High School).
Szalay, who along with five others will be recognized during the boys state championship games on March 23, recently completed his 22nd season as head varsity coach of the Clippers, compiling an 11-12 overall record (8-8 Patriot Athletic Conference Stripes Division).
Other boys coaches to be honored are Dave Froelich and Kerry Kontz (both from Van Wert High School), Bob Pasci (Twinsburg High School), Greg Richards (Mason High School) and Bob White (Columbus East High School).
