Girls basketball: Clippers survive scoring struggles

ROCKY RIVER — If Wednesday’s game between Clearview and Lutheran West was scored on artistic merit it might have ended in a scoreless tie.

Good thing for the Clippers they finished ahead 36-24 on the scoreboard because the win brought the team one game closer to its goal of winning the Patriot Athletic Conference Stripes Division championship.

“Lutheran West is an especially tough place to win and we were able to gut out a win tonight,” Cleaview coach Nick Dimacchia said.

Clearview improved to 13-4 overall and 11-2 in the PAC, guaranteeing it will stay a game ahead of Fairview in the Stripes Division standings with three league games left to play.

Both teams played hard, physical defense throughout the night, but when the offenses found open looks at the basket they struggled to convert. The Longhorns shot just 16 percent (8-for-48) from the field, while Clearview shot 31 percent (13-of-42).

Neither team scored for the first 4:24 of the game until Clearview junior Raquel Santana put her team on the board. Santana scored seven of her nine points in the first half and also led her team with 15 rebounds.

“They were triple-teaming Desiree (Ray) so I stepped out and used my outside game,” Santana said. “I like defense better than offense. I think defense wins games so I always go all out on that end of the court.”

Ray was held to just two points in the first half but still managed to finish with a game-high 12. Lutheran West (9-8, 8-5) was unable to take advantage of her early struggles, scoring just two points in the first quarter.

Things didn’t get any better for the Longhorns in the second half when they scored just 10 points and only two in the fourth quarter.

“We did a good job of stopping Desiree early but the longer the game goes it’s hard to keep stretching our defense like that,” Lutheran West coach Josh Campbell said. “We’ve had a hard time scoring the last two games. We’re going to do a lot of shooting and a lot of confidence building tomorrow.”
