Boys basketball: Midview makes fourth quarter its own, downs North Ridgeville

NORTH RIDGEVILLE — For three quarters Friday, North Ridgeville gave Midview all it could handle.

That ended in the fourth quarter.

Final score: Midview 62, North Ridgeville 51.

The Middies, who let a 40-28 lead slip away in the third quarter, turned up the offense in the fourth and took advantage of the Rangers’ foul problems to outscore them 22-11.

The Middies were 9-of-14 from the line to close out the game.

“We did a nice job of getting the ball inside and we were able to finish,” Midview coach Troy DiFranco said after his team improved to 2-1, 1-0 in the West Shore Conference.

“When they doubled down we were able to knock down some threes. Different guys contributed throughout the game.”

North Ridgeville opened the fourth quarter on an 8-4 run highlighted by two Nate Inal 3-pointers and a Matt Clark basket. The Rangers (1-2, 0-1) led 47-44 after the run, but it was the last lead they had.

Wes Davic hit two free throws and Dylan Eason had a 3-pointer to start the Middies’ comeback and put them up 49-47. It was the start of a 15-4 run that pretty much sealed the win for the Middies.

“They had a lot of momentum going into the fourth quarter,” DiFranco said of the Rangers. “I thought they came out with a lot more defensive intensity than we did in the third quarter. It was nice that we were able to withstand that run and then come out and finish off the fourth quarter.”

You could say Midview’s height advantage played a big role in the win. The Middies put 6-foot-6 Jack Duffner and the 6-5 Davic together under the basket and the pair caused problems for North Ridgeville’s inside game.

“We played tough, but when we got in the lanes they were able to contest some of our shots that we wanted to get near the basket,” North Ridgeville coach Bryan Morgan said. “The good thing was that we were good from beyond the arc in spurts. I thought our kids worked hard to create offensive rebounds for us and limit them for them.

“There were a couple that really hurt us in the fourth quarter. Eason hitting a big three off an offensive rebound really hurt. Those are the ones that are going to kill you in the fourth quarter.”

Inal led all the scorers in a losing effort with 25 points. Davic paced the Middies with 20 and Grant Overy added 18.
