All-Ohio softball: No big surprise, Keystone's Autumn Acord and Sydney Campbell and Elyria's Maycee Godbolt make first-team

All three Lorain County softball players who were named to the All-Ohio first teams said they were surprised when they learned the news. But with their names scattered all over the record books after the season, they should have known the accolades were coming.

Elyria junior catcher Maycee Godbolt was named to the Division I first team, while Keystone senior pitcher Sydney Campbell and Keystone senior catcher Autumn Acord were named to the Division II first team. It was the second straight season Campbell and Acord earned All-Ohio first-team recognition.

“I was kind of surprised because I didn’t start off as good as I did last season and I just think it’s really cool to even have the honor to be able to do it,” Acord said. “It makes me feel really important to the team because that’s a big thing.”

Acord, who set the county record with 63 hits in a season last year, batted .537 with 44 hits, 35 RBIs, 15 runs scored, seven home runs and a county-leading 22 doubles. She struck out just twice this season, and five of her home runs came during playoff games.

Campbell went 25-1 with a 0.33 ERA and 267 strikeouts. She finished with 18 shutouts, four perfect games, a no-hitter and a save.

She set the county and state records for consecutive wins with 63 — the fifth-best run in the nation — and set the county records for perfect games and strikeouts in a five-inning game (15). She also tied the county record for career shutouts (50) with Keystone’s Brittney Robinson (2000-03).

“I was kind of surprised. I really didn’t think about winning awards throughout the season,” said Campbell, who will pitch for Oakland University next year.

“Obviously it’s great to be on there with two of my teammates — (All-Ohio second-team outfielder) Marlie (McNulty) and Autumn — and it’s really just a great honor to be selected.”

The Wildcats being named to the All-Ohio first team two straight years shows how important the battery was to the team’s success. Keystone went unbeaten and won the Division II state championship last season before going 28-1 and advancing to the final four this year.

“I think it really showed that me and Sydney had a big combo towards the team,” said Acord, who will play for Kent State next year. “I think we proved ourselves although people told me that I was too small and they told Sydney that she’d never be a strikeout pitcher. We always had to prove everybody wrong and I think it’s cool that we had that opportunity to be such a great part of the team.”

Godbolt helped the Pioneers advance to the Division I state tournament two years after helping them win the state title as a freshman. She batted .548 with 49 RBIs and 13 home runs this season.

“I was kind of surprised. My mom came in my room and said congratulations and I was like, ‘What are you talking about?’” Godbolt said. “She told me I had made All-Ohio but it was 6 in the morning and I was tired and didn’t know what she was talking about. I was kind of shocked. That was one of my goals that I was working for, so for it to actually become a thing was great.”

Godbolt said her on-base percentage (.645) was one of the offensive stats she was most proud of, because many teams pitched around her. She finished with 21 walks while striking out just four times.

Godbolt finished with 46 hits, with over half (28) going for extra bases – she had 11 doubles and four triples to go with her Lorain County record-tying home run total. She also managed to turn that on-base percentage into offensive production, finishing with 44 runs scored.

With two homers as a freshman and nine last season, Godbolt is just one long ball from the county career mark of 25 — held by Keystone’s Sammie Stefan and Avon Lake’s Alexis Thomas. Stefan (2016) and Midview’s Amanda Beursken (2013) are the two players who share the single-season home run record with Godbolt.

“That’s always been one of my goals, to beat the record or to tie the record,” Godbolt said of the single-season mark. “So if I tied it this year, I know I can beat it next year. I’m not looking for a home run every at-bat, but if they come and I’m seeing the ball and I can hit it out, that’s something I’m going to be working on.”

A pair of Lorain County senior pitchers earned their second spots on the All-Ohio second teams — Amherst’s Madison O’Berg landed there for the second straight season in Division I, while Oberlin’s Bryanna Rivas was a Division III second-team pick in 2017.

Two Division I senior players earned their second straight All-Ohio honorable mention — Midview outfielder Kaeli Evins and Amherst shortstop Kasey McGraw — while Wellington freshman catcher Teddi Hardoby was given All-Ohio honorable mention in Division III.
