COLUMBIA STATION — Solid pitching and a few big hits was all it took for Wellington to stay undefeated in Patriot Athletic Conference play Thursday.

The Dukes outlasted a solid effort from Columbia, which couldn’t string together enough hits to keep up in Wellington’s 4-2 victory.

The Dukes improved to 7-0 in the conference and 8-4 overall.

Tori Paramore, one of six freshmen in the lineup for Wellington, came up with two of the biggest hits of the game and drove in a pair of runs.

“I was able to take advantage of a change-up and jump on it” Paramore said. “I think that every pitch is going to be a strike, so I am ready to swing at it. “

Paramore’s first big hit came in the third, when she clubbed a triple to deep left-center and scored with two outs for the first run of the game.

She gave the Dukes some breathing room with a two-run single to center that put her team in front 3-0 in the fourth inning.

“It feels good to find different ways to get the win and stay undefeated in conference,” Paramore said.

Columbia (6-2, 3-2) battled back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Danielle Roginsky drove in Riley West with a sacrifice fly after West singled and advanced to third. Jessi Morlock’s RBI single cut the Raiders’ deficit to 3-2.

“Our infield defense was a little shaky at times but overall I thought we did pretty well,” Columbia coach Ken Lugo said. “Give them credit, their pitcher came out and pitched a very good game against us and they played well.”

Rianna Rosecrans helped the Dukes respond quickly in the fifth.

Teddi Hardoby singled to right and Rosecrans drove her in with a sharp base hit up the middle to provide the final count.

“We put the bat on the ball today but there were still situations we can get better at,” Wellington coach Duane Sunagel said. “We’ve never had this many freshmen on our varsity team but we are playing good ball and just have to keep rolling.”

Wellington starting pitcher Payton Regal allowed five hits, striking out six and walking one. She retired the last nine Columbia hitters.

“I just felt good out there and all my teammates had my back,” she said. “We are such a young team but we are playing great.”

The Dukes played some great defense behind the sophomore pitcher.

“It feels really good to know my team has my back behind me and I can just throw strikes,” Regal said.
