Elyria’s Carly Bachna and Keystone’s Sammie Stefan set the single-season home run record at their schools this spring with 13 each.

Now they have something else in common — they’re first-team All-Ohio softball players.

Bachna and Stefan were the area’s lone first-team selections Monday when the Ohio High Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association teams were announced.

Bachna hit .506 with 36 RBIs to earn her spot on the Division I team.

“It feels really good to be recognized after a good season,” Bachna said. “I never really thought about individual honors, I simply wanted to relax and have a good year.”

Bachna, who will play at Trine University in Angola, Ind., next season, burst on the scene with five home runs her freshman year but she saved her best for her senior season when she had multihomer games at the Prebis Memorial Classic and the Elyria Softball Classic.

“My freshman year I played my role on the team well,” Bachna said. “My sophomore and juniors years were not as good but the most important thing is I had my best year in my senior year.”

Pioneers pitcher Elizabeth Ellis and Midview senior Morgan Hamker were named to the second team in Division I. Amherst’s first trip to the state tournament helped earn Ashley Cogdell and Sarah Miller Division I honorable mention honors.

“It’s nice to see your seniors go out with their best years,” Elyria coach Ken Fenik said. “Carly had a great year. She was relaxed and batted with confidence. You want your seniors to lead, you want them to set the tradition for the younger girls and Carly and Elizabeth both did that.”

Stefan earned first-team honors in Division II by putting up numbers that are without equal even in the storied history of the Keystone program. Stefan hit .591 while also setting a school-record with 60 RBIs.

Her Wildcats teammates Summer Constable and Lauren Shaw were named to the second team.

“It’s an honor to be selected All-Ohio,” Stefan said. “I want to thank Coach P. (Jim Piazza) because I’m sure he had to nominate me and all of the coaches for selecting me. Not only does it show that hard work pays off, it also brings good publicity to Keystone softball.”

The All-Ohio honors, which come on the heels of the Wildcats’ state runner-up finish Saturday, has Stefan already looking forward to next season.

“Awards are cool but Saturday’s game is my biggest motivating factor,” she said. “This season was so much fun, not only the winning and the records but just being with this great group of girls. I’m going to miss the seniors that graduated but I’m already excited for next year.”

Stefan, Shaw and Constable have all committed to playing for Big Ten schools — Stefan at Maryland, Shaw at Iowa and Constable at Purdue.

“It’s an honor for these kids and our program,” Piazza said. “There are so many good players in Ohio, for us to have three All-Ohioians says a lot about our kids and how hard they work.”

Columbia’s Leah LaMonica was a Division III honorable mention after helping lead the Raiders to a district title.
