High school baseball: Elyria’s Allgood just great: Fires first no-hitter

ELYRIA — KJ Allgood didn’t know he was going to start Elyria’s Division I sectional tournament opener until batting practice. He responded with his first win of the season.

It was a big one.

Allgood threw a five-inning no-hitter in Thursday’s 10-0 win over North Olmsted at George Day Field, redemption for a recent 15-5 loss to North Ridgeville on Senior Night.

Two walks and three hit batters kept Allgood from perfection.

“It caught me off guard because I thought I was going to play first base today,” Allgood said. “It’s my first no-hitter. It feels great. I just did my normal routine that I usually do when I pitch.”

The game was scheduled to be played at Mills Field in Strongsville, but was moved to Elyria. Despite having to play as the visiting team, the Pioneers (12-12) were quick to re-establish their home-field advantage when four of their first five batters connected for singles. Marcus Inman then capped the four-run inning with a two-RBI single.

Elyria chased Eagles starter Jacob Servidio in the second inning after scoring three more runs. Servidio only lasted 1⅓ and all seven of his runs were earned. Brodie Stewart capped the inning with a double that brought home two more, extending the Pioneers’ lead to 9-0.

“He threw me a curveball and I didn’t want to swing at that,” said Stewart, who finished with four RBIs. “Then he threw me a fastball inside, I just waited back and drove it to left field.”

Cal Smith only allowed one more run the rest of the way, an RBI single by Stewart, but North Olmsted had no answer for Allgood.

“Being a senior, he wanted to pitch his last home game, even though we were visitors,” Elyria coach Ed Piazza said of Allgood. “That’s what he can do if he stays focused, and his last few outings have been like that.”

Mike Izzarelli, Elyria’s leadoff hitter, went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Mike Parron drove in three runs, scored twice and had two hits. Allgood and Jacob Csizmadia also scored twice.
