Dallas Cowboys practice squad QB reportedly coming to Browns (with video)

Quarterback Alex Tanney, who’s never taken a snap in an NFL game, tweeted today he’s joining the Browns.

The team has yet to confirm the roster move, but was expected to sign a quarterback today to back up Brandon Weeden for the game Sunday against Jacksonville. Starter Jason Campbell suffered a concussion against Pittsburgh and is unlikely to be cleared in time.

Tanney (6-foot-4, 220 pounds) had spent the season on the practice squad of the Dallas Cowboys after being cut at the end of the preseason. He went 40-for-73 for 423 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions during the preseason.

Tanney, 26, was undrafted in 2012 out of Division III Monmouth College and spent last season on Kansas City’s injured reserve with a finger injury.

He gained some recognition for a trick-shot video he made while at Monmouth. He makes a variety of difficult and interesting throws to a series of targets.

He throws out an apartment window to a guy in the back of a moving pickup truck, hits the crossbar from his knees from 50 yards and throws several balls into basketball hoops from across the gym, including a bank shot.

Caleb Hanie was scheduled for a workout with the Browns with the hope of signing as the backup. It’s not clear yet whether Tanney’s arrival means Hanie won’t sign. Hanie has started four games in five years, all with the Bears in 2011.
