Independents file for November

SHEFFIELD TWP. - There will be at least one new face on the Wellington Village Council starting next year.

Longtime Councilman Harold Sumpter did not file to run for re-election Monday, the deadline for independent candidates to file for and get a place on the November ballot.

Sumpter, who won re-election by three votes four years ago, did not return a call seeking comment Monday on his decision to skip the village`s non-partisan race this year.

Four of the village`s six Council seats are up for re-election this year. The other three council members whose terms are up - Jeffrey Hyde, Hans Schneider and Guy Wells - all filed.

Two Wellington residents, Mark Bughman and Sandra Denes, also filed to run in the race.

In Elyria, former mayoral candidate Tim Quinn filed as an independent in the at-large council race. He will face the top four vote-getters in the Democratic and Republican primaries in November.

Also filing as an independent in Elyria was 5th Ward Councilman Mark Craig, who will face Brandon Rutherford in November.

Rutherford has been unopposed in the Democratic primary since former Councilwoman Bonnie Ivancic dropped out of the race.

Independent Edward Sinegar filed to run in the 7th Ward Council race for the seat being vacated by Councilman Ken Burkhard. Sinegar will face the winner of the Democratic primary - either Jerry McHugh or Sherry Tulk, also known as Sherry Ames - in November.

Three independents also have filed to run in Lorain, including Keith Jones, who will face Libertarian Sean Stipe and incumbent Democrats Mitch Fallis, Dan Given and Anne Molnar in the at-large Council race in November.

Councilwoman Melanie Szabo, I-1st Ward, filed in February to seek re-election. Brian Gates and Dash Sokal are running in the Democratic primary to see who will challenge Szabo in November.

Councilman Greg Holcomb, D-6th Ward, is unopposed in the primary, but will have to deal with independent challenger Bob Kerecz in the fall.
