Four people were taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain following a car crash and fire Friday morning.

South Amherst firefighters were called to the scene at Baumhart Road between the Ohio Turnpike interchange and Middle Ridge Road at 6:40 a.m. for a multiple vehicle crash. One of the vehicles caught fire as well.

“While we were fighting the fire on one car, we were cutting people out of another car,” said South Amherst Fire Chief Al Schmitz.

Tom Smith of Lorain was driving to work when he happened upon the scene at 6:53 a.m.

“People were on the ground,” he said.

Ultimately, two people were extricated from the other car, and a total of four people were transported by LifeCare to the hospital.
