AVON - Councilman Bob Butkowski was arrested on a domestic violence charge Thursday night.
Avon police arrested Butkowski, 44, about 10 p.m. after police were called to his Wendell Street home for a domestic violence complaint. According to a police report, his wife, Lisa Butkowski, called police saying her husband had forced his way into the bedroom and would not leave.
Bob Butkowski was booked into Lorain County Jail at 1:27 a.m. Friday, according to jail records. He was released at 12:02 p.m. He was charged with domestic violence by causing the belief of imminent physical harm by threat or force, according to the police report. He is scheduled to appear in Avon Lake Municipal Court at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Avon police have responded to multiple calls to the Butkowski residence over the past couple years as the couple works through an "ugly divorce," according to police reports.
On June 5, 2017, police were called to the residence about 4:15 p.m. after Lisa Butkowski told officers her husband had been following her from room to room in the house trying to intimidate her. Bob Butkowski allegedly told his wife she should "keep looking over your shoulder," which caused her to be concerned for her safety, the report said.
On June 7, 2018, Lisa Butkowski called police stating that her "soon to be ex-husband was going into her vehicle."
The report said that Bob Butkowski was trying to get some paperwork from a backpack out of his wife's vehicle. Both were grabbing at the backpack, and Bob Butkowski allegedly pushed his wife as she tried to grab the bag, the report said.
Lisa Butkowski fell backward and called police. The couple was told to stay away from each other while inside the house, as neither wanted to leave the residence, the report said.
Butkowski was elected in 2013 to represent Avon's 1st Ward, and was re-elected in 2017.
