ELYRIA — An Elyria couple who allegedly assaulted two people and trashed a Clark Street residence early Sunday morning are being held on aggravated burglary, assault and criminal damaging charges.
Amber Santiago, 29, and Lenny Santiago, 35, were arrested outside a residence in the 100 block of Clark Street about 4:30 a.m. Sunday on one count each of aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony; assault, a first-degree misdemeanor; and criminal damaging, a second-degree misdemeanor.
Lenny Santiago also was charged with an additional count of criminal damaging for the incident, which Elyria police said was reported at 3:52 a.m. and involved the Santiagos, a 29-year-old Elyria woman and a 31-year-old Grafton Township man.
According to a police report, the male and female victims had been bar-hopping Saturday night when Lenny Santiago messaged the woman asking for a ride. The alleged victims picked him up in the woman’s Ford Taurus and after stopping at a bar on Cleveland Street, went to the woman’s residence. That’s where Lenny Santiago allegedly “became very upset and began yelling and saying he wanted to fight” the male victim, according to a police report.
Lenny Santiago punched the man, who backed out of the driveway and drove with the female victim to a location on East Broad Street. The man got out and the woman drove back home. She told police she found Lenny Santiago was inside her house without permission, police said.
Inside, Lenny Santiago allegedly pushed the woman into a laundry rack, punched her repeatedly and broke household items including an artificial Christmas tree and a Dyson vacuum, according to the police report.
Amber Santiago then arrived and entered the house without permission, began arguing with her husband before turning on the female victim, punching her in the face and head, police reported. The victim was able to escape and drive to a nearby fast-food restaurant to get away.
When she returned home, she saw the Santiagos walking away from her home, but they turned around and “verbally assaulted her, and Lenny Santiago punched and kicked her vehicle causing large dents and damaging her driver side mirror” on her Ford Taurus when she pulled back into her driveway, according to the police report.
The couple then went back into the woman’s house and allegedly began throwing food around her kitchen, breaking dishes and mirrors, ripping off her toilet seat, dumping out her dresser and opening “numerous bottles of lotion or other soaps” and dumping them on the floor or throwing them on the walls, according to the police report.
Officers saw Amber Santiago walking away as they arrived and ordered her to stick around while they investigated, even as she “advised she had had just shown up and was not directly involved with the incident,”
Officers arrested Lenny Santiago after he exited the house and approached them “in an angry manner.” They also arrested Amber Santiago after hearing the female victim’s version of events, according to the police report.
The female victim refused treatment at the scene, but later went to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center for evaluation, police said.
Both Lenny and Amber Santiago were taken to Lorain County Jail, where Lenny Santiago was ordered held on $22,500 bond following his arraignment Monday in Elyria Municipal Court, and Amber Santiago held on $21,750 bond following her arraignment, according to the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office.
