ELYRIA -- Police are asking for the public's help in identifying three suspects in an attempted armed robbery Tuesday evening at the High Point In The Park apartments on West River Road North.
The intended victim suffered an ankle injury after he tackled an unarmed suspect as two other suspects -- one reportedly armed with a shotgun and another armed with a handgun -- stood by, according to Elyria Police.
Spokesman Capt. Chris Costantino said officers were dispatched at 7:11 p.m. Tuesday to the High Point apartments at 2425 West River Road North where they found the intended victim, a 37-year-old resident of the complex, and his 30-year-old girlfriend waiting for them.
Costantino said the victim told officers he had just arrived home, gotten out of his car and was walking into the building when "two black males with masks covering their faces and holding firearms approached him."
The intended victim "began to run toward the building, when a third, unarmed black male subject" also wearing a mask "jumped from behind a vehicle and blocked his path," Costantino said.
The intended victim tackled that man, and "felt something pop in his ankle" as he did. Other residents came outside and the suspects stopped assaulting the victim and fled, possibly in a white Jeep, Costantino said.
Nothing was taken during the attempted robbery, he said. The victim went to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center for treatment of the ankle injury.
The suspects "appeared to be in their early 20s" but the victim and other witnesses could not give police much more of a description than that, Costantino said.
Anyone who has any information about the incident is asked to call the Elyria Police Department at (440) 323-3302.
